killdeer.jpgI am really struggling with hunter image lately.

I go out of my way to portray a positive image when it comes to my hunting.  I try to portray myself in a way that shows I am respectful of people, animals, and the outdoors.  I really try to counter the common misconceptions when it comes to hunting.  I try to show that I am not the beer drinking, redneck, barbaric killer that plenty of people think I am.

People are honestly shocked sometimes when they learn that I am a hunter.  I have even had people tell me “Well, you don’t look like a hunter.”  Those type of comments have always made me wonder what most people’s idea of a hunter really is.  And since I have found that a lot of what most people associate with hunters didn’t really fit my mold, I go out of my way to show a different side of hunters.  I try to portray us as people who are passionate about the outdoors, have a great love for animals and the outdoors, and are all around good people.

How do I do that one might ask?  One way is to talk about hunting with other people.  Taking the time to explain hunting is a great way to leave people with a good vision of what hunters really are.  Since, normally, these people aren’t around hunters all the time, I feel that we need to be a little conscious of the terms we use and the things we talk about.  Obviously, talking about blood and guts, and those types of things, isn’t the appropriate way to go about explaining hunting to a person who hasn’t been exposed to hunting that way.  Basically, what I’m trying to say, is there are certain things we need to do, in order to portray us a certain way, to certain people.

It is too bad that plenty of hunters out there are going out of their way to make us look bad.

First, let me start by saying that I don’t think we need to apologize for hunting.  That is far from the case.  What I do think we need to do is stay away from certain things that put is in a bad light when viewed by people who are on the fence about hunting.

“Kill deer, drink beer” and other such shirts and bumper stickers don’t do a thing to help out image.  I could name many other examples of things like that, but I think all of you get my drift.  How can one be surprised, if they wear a shirt such as this, or sport this type of bumper stick on their truck, at how we are viewed by the non-hunting public.  Symbols such as these, while meant in fun, can’t really do much for our hunting image can they?

We have enough of an uphill battle when it comes to our image.  Do we really need to help how we are perceived by flashing our beer and deer sweatshirts?  I am a little frustrated by these types of shirts and such, and it seems that a lot of guys go out of their way to wear these things.  Don’t they realize the image they are portraying by wearing these types of shirts?

I go out of my way to project an image of hunters, and hunting, that shows who most of us are really are.  We are compassionate, outdoor loving, regular guys, who care about people, care about the outdoors, and really care about the animals we hunt.

So, can you guys do me a favor and leave your “Drink beer, kill deer” shirts at home?

tears-9-11-01.jpgMay we never forget the victims, and the families of the victims, from that tragic day.

It is easy to move on and not remember, but it is necessary that we do remember.

May we also never forget the men and women who have perished defending our country after that fateful day.

And may we also never forget the current members of our Armed Forces, who are sacrificing time with their families at this very moment, so that all of us can enjoy time with ours.

God Bless America, Land of the Free and Home of the Brave!   Thee greatest country on earth.

fall-leaves.jpgIt’s almost that time again; almost time for the leaves to start their transformation.  It is amazing to watch what mother nature can do; to watch her transformation.  It is almost as if the leaves become aflame; all the reds, and yellows, slowly shining their way through until the transformation is complete.  It is a such a grand splendor, even if it ultimately results in the leafs free fall, and death.  It is just another way that mother nature revives herself.  And it sure provides a great spectacle for all of us to enjoy.

I can’t wait to be able to sit amongst this grand transformation.  I can’t wait to be sitting in a treestand, breathing the crisp fall air, and taking in the show that is fall.  All of us hunters get to witness this great event up close and personal.  We notice, as the season starts, how green the forest is.  Then, as the season starts to change, we notice the change in the scenery around us, and we also ultimately notice, the absense of leaves once that process is complete.  Unless you hunt, you more than likely have never heard a leaf detach from its branch, and slowly free-fall to its ground location, where it will decompose and provide life for others.  It is something that is so simple, and yet something that so many people have missed.

I am looking forward to watching the leaves change, and taking in everything that is fall.  And I can’t think of a better way to do it, then while I’m sitting in a treestand, taking in mother nature, and watching all of the great things She has to offer.  If you haven’t experienced it, you’re definitely missing out.

This season is almost upon us!

It’s September already.  Fall is just around the corner.   And our early doe season is only a few weeks away.  The bow opener will be here in just 29 days, and little Abigail’s due date is just a few weeks after that.

Where has all the time gone?

smashwall.jpgJeff and I have an archery competition this weekend to attend, and the wife has a baby shower.  Jeff and I will be flinging arrows-hoping not to smash them into cinder blocks-and the wife will be opening baby presents.

It is definitely starting to feel like fall in the early morning, and also late at night.  And before I know it it will be time to rake leaves.  Of course those will take a back seat to little Abby and time in my treestand.

I love this time of year, and hopefully my work this week isn’t as bad as I think it is going to be.  Maybe then I can actually put a few more posts together–posts that are a little more structured then this random post.

I am so ready for this Fall.  A ton of exciting stuff is just on the horizon.

I can’t believe that the summer is almost over already.  Man how times flies.  Of course it isn’t all bad because that means that hunting is right around the corner, and that football is already here!!!!
