First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...
Nature: Life in Stereo
As the beginning notes of Round Here made contact with my auricles, I was in heaven; I had forgotten how incredible my Bose earphones were.  I could hear every instrument in the song - the chords on the guitar; the intricate timing of the cymbals and snare; the keyboard quietly playing in the background.  It was as if I was experiencing the song for the first time, though I had heard it many tim...

Big Buck Night

Posted By: Arthur on February 16, 2008 in Local Organizations - Comments: 1 Comment »

We did attend the Big Buck Night event this evening, and I have to say, for it being the first time that this event took place in this particular location, I thought the turnout was very respectable and even exceeded expectations.

We all had a very good time, enjoyed a good meal, and had some fun chatting and talking to friends.  Of course we also got to enjoy some big buck stories and see some incredible deer that were taken in our county.  As promised Mark Thomas, a member of the QDMA board of directors was the guest speaker, and he did a very good job.  I have to be honest though, and say that his message was a little over the top for me, but his underlying ideas were very good and something I will try and use in the future.

I have to apologize because I don’t have any pictures.  We were allowed to take cameras in, but it would have been too much of a hassle to get everyone’s permission to put their pictures up on the website.  A friend of mine took some pictures of all of us at the event so when I get them from him I will share (hopefully you read this Ron).

All in all a good night, good food, and it went to a good cause.  I’m looking forward to the QDMA REACH banquet in April.

An Antler Evening

Posted By: Arthur on in Local Organizations, Outdoor News, Things to see - Comments: 1 Comment »

bigbucknight.jpgFinally it has arrived.  Jeff, his girlfriend Jodette, Jenn, and I will all be heading over and meeting up with some friends for Big Buck Night.  I have never attended one of these events, and it is also the first time that this event has been held in my hometown so it should make for an interesting night.

They are limited to the first 250 guests so we are going to get there early, especially since we live right down the road from the event.  I always freak out about these limited seating events, so hopefully it all goes smooth and we are able to get in the door and get a seat.

MUCC’s Michigan Out-of-Doors Television staff and crew will be there, as well as Tony Hansen, the editor for Michigan Out-out-of-Doors Magazine.  Hopefully we get to meet a few of them and get to chat and introduce ourselves.  Of course I can’t forget the most important thing;  getting to see some big bucks and hear the stories of how those lucky hunters got the chance of a lifetime.

I also went one step further and purchased tickets to the QDMA REACH banquet that will be coming to the same location in April.  By doing this I got tickets to that event, my membership to QDMA,  as well as one free admission into the Big Buck Night show.  Not a bad deal and I’m looking forward to my first QDMA event.  I have been skeptical about QDM in the past, but I’m willing to give it a shot after talking to a couple of gentlemen I trust and also after some encouraging words about the program from Jeff over at Lowcountryhunting.

Speaking of QDMA, the guest note speaker for tonight’s event is Mark Thomas, who is on the board of directors for QDMA.  I have heard that he is an excellent speaker and worth the price of admission.

So we are looking forward to the big event tonight and hopefully we will get some good insight as well as have some pictures to share before the weekend is through.

Have a good weekend everyone!

SimplyOutdoors Mission?

Posted By: Arthur on February 11, 2008 in Local Organizations, Opinion, Ramblings - Comments: 11 Comments »

goals.jpgJeff and I have had this argument back and forth a couple of times now. What exactly it is that we want to get out of having our little website? It seems we never can come to an agreement on exactly what our mission for the site is. The debate still continued yesterday.

Jeff’s dream and mission for the site would be for us to have SimplyOutdoors Productions. He would love to start a production company and be producing amateur hunting videos for everyone to enjoy. He would also like to be sponsored and travel the United States filming these hunts that depict two average working guys and their outdoor adventures.

My vision is different. First off, I’m a pessimist, so I tend to lean towards the negative side of Jeff’s goal. In this day and age everyone is trying to start their own production company. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to look around and find a couple of guys who are trying to start their own outdoor company. They are everywhere and that means there is a ton of competition in the market that Jeff wants to pursue. That makes me very nervous.

The other part that I am always leary about is this. I never intended for this site to be a money maker or anything of that nature. It started as fun and I personally want to keep it that way. I’m not sure that can happen if we actually turned it into a full fledged business. It seems to me, that normally when a hobby like this becomes work, some of the pleasure of it goes way and I never want that to happen.

Now I know what all of you are wondering-”He said what Jeff wanted to do, and what he doesn’t want to do, but he hasn’t said what his goal for the site is.” Well here it goes. My mission statement for SimplyOutdoors would go something like this:

SimplyOutdoors.net will strive to be a positive voice for the outdoors. We will promote all persons, especially young people, who engage in outdoor pursuits as well as work to support our local and national outdoor organizations. We will promote our love and passion for the outdoors by working to portray a positive image of hunters and outdoorsman through various outlets. We will HAVE FUN!

There, in a nut shell, you have my mission for our site. I am thinking I might officially adopt it. I do want people to read the website, but most importantly I want every person that reads it to leave with a positive feeling about hunters and our outdoor pursuits.

One day down the road I might completely change my mind and Jeff might be able to sway me to the other side, but for now this is my goal and I intend to stick to it. Now that does not mean that you won’t see some fun things happening on the site. I would love to start filming hunts and doing things of that nature. The bottom line though is that I want it to be fun.

I think we have done a lot to accomplish our goals already and I’m looking forward to the things to come.

Deer and Turkey Spectacular 2008

Posted By: Arthur on February 10, 2008 in Local Organizations, Opinion, Outdoor News, Things to see - Comments: 7 Comments »

mitopnav01a.gifWhat an action packed day we had yesterday.  We did head out to the Deer and Turkey Spectacular and I have to say that this year was probably thee best show I have been too since I started attending.  I’m not sure if it was because we utilized the show more, or if it was because the show was just better all around, but it was a very good time and made for a fun informative day.

We did sit through two seminars and both were very educational and eye opening.  The first one was from Greg Abbas.  All of you may know Greg from his A-way Outdoors TV program that airs on The Sportsman Channel.  We sat through Greg’s turkey hunting seminar and let me just tell you that it was definitely an eye opener for Jeff, Jenn, and I.  He pointed out a few common mistakes that beginner turkey hunters seem to do, and I have to admit that Jeff and I were guilty of quite a few of them.  His seminar was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone.  He was a very good speaker and knew how to keep the audience entertained while also providing excellent tips and knowledge.  We can’t wait to use some of that knowledge this coming season.

We also listened to John Eberhart, who has a book called Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails.  John is a very knowledgable guy and shoots some incredible bucks from our home state, but I have to be honest and say that I was a little bored during his session.  You have to listen to the guy though, because he really knows his stuff, especially when it comes to hunting mature bucks in our home state.

We also saw archery trick shooter Byron Ferguson.  This gentleman’s skill with a long bow is just amazing.  I asked and found out that he started shooting when he was 12 and man is he incredible.  It was nice to actually see him miss once as well.  It just proved to me that he was human and I enjoyed that for some reason.  He does some incredible shots and is an excellent show for the kids as well.  He geared a lot of things towards them and I was very impressed with his overall showmanship.  I know my nephew Tyler thoroughly enjoyed watching him.

img_0232.JPGJeff also entered a coupleimg_0231.JPG of his deer from past years and had them officially scored.  It is funny how one rack can look much bigger than another yet not score as much as the other.  I hope that made sense.  You can see the results in the pictures so I won’t say them here, but at least he knows what one to brag about as his biggest now.

We also talked to some local gentleman from the local chapters of QDMA, Michigan Bowhunters Association, and even realized that Family Tradition Treestands were based in the town I grew up in, and still currently live, yet I didn’t even know they were anywhere close to me.  The things you found out.

I will go into more depth on a few of those organizations, and also plan on doing a little story about Family Tradition Treestands in the near future so stay tuned for those.

img_0235.JPGOverall we had a very good img_0233.JPGday, and the kids had a blast as well.  They sported their balloon creations for a good part of the show and loved seeing the live animals and checking out everything that the show had to offer.

The only downside to the day was that we spent so much time at the show that we never did make it over to the Michigan Historical Museum A Hunting We Will Go exhibit.  We’ll have to save that for another day.

A Free Hunting History Lesson

Posted By: Arthur on February 6, 2008 in Local Organizations, Opinion, Outdoor News - Comments: 4 Comments »

mhc_mhm_hunting-cabin_206991_7.jpgI sat down the other night to read our local Community Newspaper and noticed that the Michigan Historical Museum was putting on a neat little history lesson for all of us who enjoy hunting and the outdoors.

They have an exhibit that runs though March 31st entitled A-Hunting We Will GoThis exhibit covers the history of Michigan hunting and its impact on the state in the past and present.   It covers prominent outdoor businesses in the state, such as Jays Sporting Goods, and also features pieces about Fred Bear and Ted Nugent, and their impact on the Michigan hunting community.  It even touches on the Mackinaw Bridge and its role in Michigan hunting traditions and the impact it has had on the traditional up-north hunting trips.

I honestly had no idea that this exhibit existed until this article, but I am glad that I ran across it and I plan on visiting this exhibit some time in the near future.  I thought I might even be able to work it in this weekend after we get done with the local outdoor show that we are going to visit.  That would make for a great day.

I think it would be an awesome activity for the whole hunting family to enjoy and best of all parking and admission is free on the weekends.  I hope to visit real soon and I’m hoping they let us take a few pictures to share as well.
