gun.jpgFinally the day has arrived when all of us Michigan turkey hunters can check to see if we were successful with our Spring turkey hunt applications. It has seemed that this day took forever to get here.

I am happy to report that I was successful in obtaining a permit and that my season will run from April 21st-May 4th. Those were the days that I picked and I was lucky enough to get the dates I chose. I couldn’t be happier.

Jeff and I are planning on sighting in our guns this weekend and Jeff just bought a new gun for turkey hunting this year that he is excited about. It is the gun you see at the beginning of this post. It’s a Westernfield 12 gauge which was made by Mossberg and sold by Montgomery Wards. He added a red dot scope, some camo tape, a vent ribbed barrel, and a undertaker screw-in turkey choke to complete the setup. He hasn’t had the best gun the last two years so we will see how well this one shoots. Hopefully he can at least compete with my Remington 870, and the Remington Extra Full turkey choke that is in it. We shall see about that.

Needless to say both of us are looking forward to the season and I just have a feeling that this is our year for turkeys. I think that not only one of us, but probably both of us, will be knocking one down. Our off season preparation is going to be the ticket. Only a couple months away and we’re stoked.

turkstmp08.jpgJust a quick little blurb to let everyone know that I put in my turkey hunting application today.  I’m crossing my fingers that I get the hunt I selected.  You have two choices when you submit your application and I went with what I thought were the best two available.

My first choice was for a hunt that will be from April 21st through May 4th.  It is available on all private lands and is the one I’m really hoping to get.  My other choice runs from May 12th through May 31st.  Not the greatest time.  I would rather have the earlier hunt and catch the Gobblers when they are looking heavily for the ladies, but I will take either.

If for some reason I’m not successful with either choice, there is a guaranteed hunt period that runs from May 5th-May31st.  That could work too, but I have yet to be turned down for the first choice I made.  That hunt has a 65,000 quota and I think my odds are pretty good.

I can check the results of the drawing starting March 3rd so everyone keep your fingers crossed.  Lets hope this year either Jeff or I can provide turkey dinner for the first time.

wild_turkey-02.jpgI know that most of you probably haven’t even thought about Spring yet, but believe it or not in only a few months, it will be here for all of us to enjoy.  With the harsh winter months upon us it is often hard to look ahead to the warm days that Spring brings with it.  With Spring also comes many activities to enjoy and the first one that comes to mind for me is turkey hunting.

I’ve only been hunting turkey’s for the last two years, but it is a sport I have definitely grown to love.  My first outings weren’t that eventful and I started to wonder what the hype surrounding turkey hunting was all about.  All of that changed last year when Jeff and I had a tom answer our diaphragm call, and gobbling the whole way, cross our shooting lane at 60 yds.  Too far for a shot, but as any of you who turkey hunt know, a big ole tom answering your hen call will definitely make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.  It was awesome, awesome stuff, and a morning I will never forget.

For all of you in Michigan who want the chance to experience that rush again this year, make sure you head on over to the DNR’s site and fill out your turkey application.  It doesn’t take long and there are a number of choices to accomodate all hunting preferences.  Also many different dates so that you can work it into your schedule.

I think Jeff and I are going to try and get the same hunt again this year, so that we can work together to hopefully bag us our first turkey(s).  I’m looking forward to it.
