As with all hunting and fishing excursions, this morning’s trip started out with promise. Unfortunately, though, that promise eventually turned into a very disappointing trip.
Jeff, Ron and I all headed out to Duck Lake in Calhoun County for our first fishing trip that required a boat. The problem with the entire trip though, was that it was our “first” of the year; and the first time out with any type of mechanized vehicle – on land or water – always has its share of interesting moments.
The downward spiral started when Ron tried to pull in the trolling motor and the rope snapped. Then, not long after that, the boat refused to start. As we were drifting toward shore in the gale-force winds, I was honestly thankful that the trolling motor was still in the water (it had to be, because we were still working out how exactly to get it out of the water after the rope broke), because it was the only thing that was going to prevent us from being a permanent fixture on someone’s dock
Let the fun begin.
To add to all the excitement, the temperature was only in the mid-50′s, and there was a wind coming from out of the Northwest, which made it feel like we should be bow hunting, not chasing after largemouth.
It was crazy…….and chilly!
Despite all the craziness though, and a few setbacks (we caught two whole fish total), we still managed to have a little fun, and it didn’t keep us from smiling and sharing a few laughs.
And maybe – just maybe – the next time we head out in chase of a few bass, it will feel more like June, and less like the middle of November.
And despite the hardships and the challenges of a “first” trip, it still was definitely better than being at work!

Shh…. you’re telling everyone why I always do my best to skip out on the first duck hunting trip of the year!
