Some of you may have been wondering where I’ve been. Well, to be honest, after working on a computer all day – and especially because of how crazy work has been lately – just the thought of getting on the computer when I got home made me nauseous. But since work was a little bit easier today, I figured I would at least update all of you about a few things that have or will be happening at the SimplyOutdoors camp.
A First Time Turkey Hunt: Last Saturday, Jeff took a young hunter, Sydney, and her Dad, Alex, on their first turkey hunt. Though they didn’t manage to get Sydney a bird – they may try again soon, though – they did manage to show the daughter/dad combo a few things about turkey hunting and had a great time. Barry Cooper, one of our field staffers, did the calling for the day, and even his professional calling couldn’t quite seal the deal. I guess that’s hunting for you, though.
Always check your tags!: In my last post, I recapped Jeff’s turkey season up to that point. The next day though, Jeff called me to let me know that he had misplaced his license and couldn’t find it; and that, when he went to the local box store to get a replacement license, they informed him that the system was showing that he had bought a license for the late season hunt and not for the earlier season he had already participated him.
After some more investigation, it was determined that when he originally bought his license, though he requested the early hunt, the store sold him a license for the late hunt. He called the
local DNR branch, confessed his sins, and they provided him with the best advice that could be given: after buying your license – and before you sign it - always check your tag!!!
Needless to say, Jeff will now be hunting with the wife and I during the late hunt.
This Weekend: Since Jeff can’t hunt, he’ll be taking Ashley, our teenage cousin, on her second hunt of the year. They came really close to putting her first bird on the ground on Monday, but it seemed that the closer they got to birds, the harder it got to actually kill them. And while Ashley was fully convinced that she could make a 60yd shot, Jeff called her off; hopefully she gets a closer opportunity on Saturday.
Upcoming Turkey season: Next Monday, May 2, is opening day of turkey season for the wife and I (and Jeff, too, of course). We can’t hunt opening morning – Jeff will be out there with a young ‘un though – but you can bet that we’ll be out there come next Saturday morning. My first goal is to get my wife a bird, and if that happens, I think I have myself convinced that I’m going to try and arrow my first turkey. If I could fulfill both of those goals, I’d be a very happy man.

Man I tell you these birds have gotten the best of us so far! This weekend things are gonna change
and yes always check your tags!!! I went to get ashley’s tag and they did the same thing and I had to have them void it!!
It sounds like all is well over in Simply Outdoors World. I’m glad Jeff didn’t have any big issues from not having the license he thought he had! Good luck to you all for the remainder of the season.
Good luck in your upcoming turkey adventures!!
Justin and I will be hunting Monday and Tuesday too!!! Hopefully someone gets a bird!!!!
I know you will. And when you get one, I’ll put up a post. I promise.
Boy did I have fun those two weekends!:) Thanks again Jeff and Barry!!
Your welcome Sydney! Hope to do it again come this fall.
Me too.
Great now that wolves are off the Michigan endangered species list my WHOLE science project is ruined!!
