For as long as I can remember, music has been a huge part of my life, with hunting, of course, being right up there as well. In fact, I used to dream of being a songwriter – a melodic poet of words – and hoped that one day I could move people with those words – allow them to escape, to dream, and to understand.
As dreams go, though, that dream has stayed just that – a dream. Granted, it’s a dream I wouldn’t mind to have happen one day on accident, but not one I would be willing to give up my current life to pursue; having a family is way more important than any song writing gig could ever be, and I much prefer to live that life than hang out in some shady Nashville hotel room, trying to “make it big”.
With that being said, though, I’m still fascinated by words – words written by great authors; words written in great blogs; or words written by great songwriters. From great songwriters of old – Robert Plant and Waylon Jennings – to great songwriters of now – Jamey Johnson and Tony Arata – I have always been fascinated with how much the written word – or words set to music – can have an impact on one’s well-being, and on one’s soul.
I suppose deep down that is where this blog started from. Sure, it started as a means to share outdoor information and outdoor fun, but it quickly became much more than that; it became a means for me to reach out – an avenue to accomplish a long forgotten and suppressed goal: to move people with my own words; to make them feel, think, reflect, and try to understand.
This blog has certainly provided me with a necessary outlet for reasons, thoughts, and feelings that have been embedded within me for years, and I hope it makes you think, feel, wonder, ponder, and even object from time to time. That is the whole idea.
Though I may never write anything equivalent to the Gettysburg address, or Garth Brook’s “The Dance”, I may write something on here which inspires, provokes, or pleases.
And that is more than I ever thought I could accomplish.
