My weekend started seventeen feet high in a dual ladder stand, as my cousin, Ashley, and I were trying to put her first deer in the freezer. Unfortunately, though, the weather didn’t really cooperate, and after avoiding an early morning storm, an hour and a half into our hunt, we were headed for Jeff’s house, because lightning and hunting do not mix.
I was a little disappointed, but, as always, one of the perks of hunting with the kids is to have a chance to talk – and Ashley and I did plenty of that. I caught up on how school was going this year, how much she loves fall, and had a great time just hanging out in the stand with her.
Sunday morning found Jeff and his son, Tyler, situated in a pop up blind on the backside of Jeff’s property. I don’t think it was even 8am before Jeff was calling me to let me know that Tyler had made an awesome 50yd shot on a doe, and it would be filling the freezer this year.
Technically, Tyler has already bagged a deer – he made a second shot on a deer a few years back that Jeff had already made an errant shot on – but this deer is truly Tyler’s first kill, and all of us couldn’t be more proud of him.
Congrats, Tyler. The hardest one of your career is now out of the way. And size does not matter whatsoever.

Congrats to Tyler! Tasty deer meat for the freezer, and an awesome experience all in one morning. Gotta love that!
Awesome!… Congratulations to Tyler and Jeff, because I know Jeff was as excited or more so!… the memories that are being made will become more and more special… I’ve been sitting in a meadow with my Dad who will be 81 next month… We’ve not taken any deer yet but we’ve seen the morning begin to stir upon the meadow and then the evening stillness as the shadows settle over the field… It has been a very precious time for me. I hope you and Jeff will be sitting in a tree stand with your child by your side when you are 80+!
Never thought about it like that! I guess everything does come full circle in life.
Congrats to Tyler! And good luck to the rest of the Simply Outdoors gang this season.
Congratulations Tyler! Good luck to everyone – Hubby shot his first deer of the season last night too, a button buck (trust me he’ll get lots of ribbing about that one) but it’s the first of the meat for the freezer this season and we’re excited!
Glad to see you back, Jenn. We were starting to wonder where you were.
