Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

A Blog Contemplation

Posted By: Arthur on February 3, 2010 in Ramblings - Comments: 7 Comments »

I’m sure all of you have heard the following definition for insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results.”  And lately, that is the way I feel about this blog.

I always sit down, write a post, and expect that people will visit the site and leave a few comments.  Unfortunately, though, that hasn’t been the case as of late.  And honestly, it has gotten so bad that I actually tested the comments section of the blog to make sure that it was, in fact, working……..and it is…….and that disheartened me even more.

I know this is a terrible time of year for outdoor blogs, but I’m starting to wonder how much time I’m going to devote to the blog.   I will never quit writing – even if it’s only for the purpose of logging my outdoor exploits and adventures for my own future reference – but I’m wondering if, just maybe, there is more I need to be doing on this site in order to keep people interested; or if there are certain topics or ideas that you would like to hear more about.

Hopefully this is the post where I actually start to hear a little back; and the point where I’m able to get an insight into what I need to do in order to generate a little more conversation.

So, let me hear it…….or not.

  1. It is that time of year and some of my regulars seem to not be regulars. I haven’t been visiting blogs as regularly as I use to either though. I’m hoping sometime soon, I can make the time to figure out what’s working and what isn’t as far as my time is concerned.

I’d hate to see you not posting. I’ve always enjoyed your blog. Maybe it is time for change though. But only you can answer that. ;)

    Art,
I know how you feel. Sometimes you feel your talking to yourself. And before you know it your even answering yourself!
I send out an email blast about once a month, it really jumps the figures on my analytic’s report. I’ve decided number of comments is not a good measure of readership.

I’ve had the same problems with my blog – hardly any comments. But I’m the same as Jody – I haven’t hardly been visiting blogs either – my schedule is insane these days.

Arthur I read it, but I hardly ever post, you know that.
    Keep writing.

  5. Hey Art -

    Good question!

My thoughts at the moment lead right back to questions: What’s really exciting you or moving your heart? What’s really making you think?

Those events and topics are, I think, the ones that tend to generate more responses from folks. If it excites or moves you or makes you think, it’ll probably do the same for others.

Well Arthur, I hesitate to even answer bcause thats the million dollar question for any of us I would guess and I believe every once in awhile we have to come back to that question time and time again. Why am I doing this? I believe if I don’t enjoy writing, I’m smoking the wrong weed. From what I’ve seen, some write to entertain, some write to give instruction, some write to communicate with others about knowledge, about their feelings, about strengthening our hunting bonds. You name it, theres a 100 different reason why we write. I guess we all just have to be honest with ourselves and do it for the answer we come up with. I can’t imagine tying myself to have to put something down every day, some are able to do it but that would take the fun out of it for me. I just like to tell stories, pure and simple. So its an individual thing, just make sure you enjoy what you are doing. I think thats great that you do it even as a journal for future reference and if others want to look in – great. I enjoy looking over others blogs and the ones I tend to more then others are the story tellers. Some I comment on, some I don’t – time element again. Some even get to heavy for me – I favor the lighter side, maybe thats my age.

Come on over some time and over cold pizza we can chat about it. I think I’ll stick to my chicken sandwich though.

Arthur – please keep posting….I’ve enjoyed your blog also and try to link when I can to you. I have not been going around visiting much lately and feel bad about it but will try to do better. Keep up the great work my friend! :)
