Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

Outdoor Dormancy

Posted By: Arthur on January 31, 2010 in Fishing, Hunting, Ramblings - Comments: 2 Comments »

The original plan, last weekend, was to head on out to one of our local lakes and put my first ice fishing trip under my belt.  I was honestly pretty excited, and had my 20 layers of winter clothing laid out for the late morning excursion, only to have Mr. Simplyoutdoors himself, Jeff, call and cancel on me.  Apparently he was a tad bit concerned because of the below zero wind chills……and I honestly couldn’t blame him; I rolled back over, and went back to bed.

We try to do what we can this time of year to keep ourselves immersed in some sort of outdoor experience, but that tends to be a tall order; the rabbits hold tight in seriously cold weather like we’ve been experiencing; ice fishing doesn’t stir up an incredible amount of emotion for me; and it’s difficult this time of year to find outdoor things that provide the same rush and relaxation as chasing after whitetails, running and gunning after turkey, or fishing for giant largemouth.

This time of year the turkey fields lay dormant and silent, and the whitetails are hunkered down and safe from any human hunting; the largemouth are safe and sound under an incredible ice shield; the campgrounds are virtually a ghost town; and it’s hard for the hunter and outdoorsman within to find solace in much of anything.

But I’ll keep trying.

Hopefully these below-zero wind chills let up this week, and allow us to do something outside.  I kept cabin fever at bay last weekend, but this weekend it is rearing its ugly head once again.

For now I find some comfort in knowing that, in just a few short months, the longbeards will be gobbling their head off to answer my push-pull hen call; the local lakes will start to thaw in preparation for spring spawning; and the campgrounds will start to fill up as people start to show themselves after their winter hibernation.

I’m counting the days.

I suppose it’s hard to totally concentrate when writing an article, but I would like to hear more about those “Largemouth does.” Sounds very interesting. Please don’t fire your proofreader, we all do it!

I’m not sure how the “does” part of that got in there; probably can be blamed on my stupid laptop keyboard. Thanks for the heads-up, Mike.
