I didn’t hunt last Sunday. The weather conditions were pretty good; I had ample time to hunt; and I had a more than reliable means to get there. But I didn’t hunt. Why you ask? I was burnt out.
You would think that the guy who runs the outdoor blog would never tire of being outdoors, or participating in outdoor-related activities, but from time to time it happens. Sunday was one of those times. After my early success, a ton of time spent in the woods this year, and some recent frustration, I took Sunday off and didn’t head into the woods.
What did I do instead? Well, I hung out with my daughter, watched some football that I’ve missed out on all season, and was completely lazy to be honest. It was time well wasted, though. I don’t get to spend that many hours with my daughter normally, or my wife for that matter, so I have no regrets. Plus, it gave me some time to sleep in and even take a nap later on in the afternoon. This whole getting up at 5am every day, whether for work or for hunting, starts to wear on you after while. It was nice to sleep a little.
And since this is an introspective, and I’m being honest, frustration was part of the reason for not entering the woods. I haven’t seen a deer since our firearm season started. Plus, despite my early success during archery season, my total deer sightings have been few and far between as well. Being human, and after spending that much time in the woods, it is only natural to need a break in order to reflect on the hunting season: the things I’ve been doing right; the things I’ve been doing wrong.
Sunday was a day that allowed me to relax, have some quality time with family, and let me re-energize the brain and prepare it for the rest of the hunting season. I’ll be back out on Thanksgiving morning, and hopefully this cold spell that is coming our way will get the deer up and on the move. Maybe then I can actually capitalize on the weather, and put a decent deer on the ground. Heck, I’d settle for actually seeing a deer at this point.
Or maybe I’ll just let Justin be my guide. Obviously, he’s not having a problem finding deer.

I have days like that with my computer. lol Especially on the weekends.
The season isn’t over yet…good luck!
Arthur, I would not worry. Sometimes you just have to not walk out that door.
I have had days were I just wanted to stay home with the family and get comfy on the couch with a movie and popcorn while I watch my wife read and Tyler play with his toys. So relax and enjoy.
Gotta have a break from time to time. Remember, hunting is FUN. If it becomes work (and you’re not getting paid for it), then it’s time to back off and find something else to do for a while. The woods and the critters will still be there.
Ya know, sometimes you’ve just gotta hit the reset button. Sounds like you’ve done that now!
Your body knows when you need to rest and with life’s frustrations it will wear on you. Hang in there…hopefully, you will get one Thanksgiving morning and by the way, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Hubby did that on Thanksgiving – he just stayed home, played with the kids, laid around on the couch and then when we went to dinner we weren’t waiting for him to get back from hunting and everyone was relaxed – it was a good day!
