The weekend didn’t start out great – rain on Friday, and again on Saturday, along with 30+mph winds. I don’t mind hunting in the wind, but with wind gusts up to 45mph possible I decided to stay safe, and stay home. Plus it gave me an opportunity to enjoy an entire day with Abby, and that was way better than any hunting I could have done anyway.
Sunday I did manage to hit the woods. I figured, with the nasty weather we had the two days prior, that Sunday would be an incredible day to be in the woods. I’d been hearing stories of bucks chasing does – although I hadn’t witnessed it myself – so I figured after a couple days of crappy weather that the deer would be on the move. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case in my neck of the woods, however.
Sunday did produce my first buck sighting of the year – a little four-point. And I was glad that was all he was as well, because he decided to show himself when I was….um….ahem…..busy with some paperwork. I honestly think going No. 2 in the woods is a sure deer attractant, and it didn’t fail me on Sunday morning. And don’t get me wrong, I was not against shooting him in the middle of the act, but when I noticed he was just a little guy I let him go on his merry way.
Sunday was very cool, because the wife finally decided to join me in the woods. This was the first time she’d been out since Abby was born, and I was happy to let her tag along with me. She had an excellent opportunity, but the doe busted her as she turned to prepare for the shot; that might have been a blessing in disguise anyway, because she accidentally dropped her bow out of the stand earlier in the night, so she wasn’t real confident that everything was still alright. The bow looks okay, and it appears that one of her arrows absorbed the impact. But we’ll still shoot it before she heads back out next time.
I had a few deer in front of me, and had an opportunity to kill a little button buck about 20 times, but obviously decided to let him grow bigger. At one point he was only about ten yards away, and had absolutely no clue I was anywhere near him. Hopefully he grows up, gets a nice set of antlers, and gets a tad smarter……or maybe not. I didn’t add any venison to the freezer, but it was a great day in the woods just the same, and provided a number of new memories: getting busted by the deer while answering the call of nature, and seeing two crows fighting so hard that they crashed to the ground. Weird birds!
Unfortunately, Jeff didn’t have quite as good of a weekend, and he will be replaying a shot he took over and over and over again. I’ll let him decide if he wants to share that story or not.
With the time change there will be no hunting action this week, but you can bet that come Saturday I will be in-stand once again……..waiting for some stupid love-crazed buck to come strolling by……….hopefully!

It does sound like the perfect weekend. Spending time doing the things you enjoy.
