I honestly can’t believe that it took me until June to put some line in the water. But this year that was, and is, the sad reality. I can remember when I was a kid, and time stood still – Christmas would never get here, and fishing trips took an eternity to arrive. Now, at 31, it seems like life is in overdrive and I can’t get it to slow down.
On Sunday night a whole gang of us, several kids included, headed over to a private pond we can fish. The kids had a great time, and although they weren’t real thrilled about actually taking the fish of the hook, they had an excellent time casting the line and reeling the fish in. I love these little private ponds. They are perfect for the kids because they don’t require a lot of patience before you actually have a strike. In this day and age that is very important, and it keeps the kids interested for a longer period of time.
The kids were using wax worms, and me – being the kind of guy I am – immediately tied on a beetle spin and went after some bass. Apparently, though, the bass knew I was after them. Usually when I fish this pond it isn’t anything to catch 20 or more fish. Typically they are hitting the lure soon after it hits the water, but on this night for some reason they were not cooperating. I threw everything at them, and they just didn’t care. I’m not sure if our unseasonably cool temps had something to do with it or not, but I’m thinking in a few weeks – after a few warmer days – that the pond will pick up just a bit.
The kids didn’t care about any of that, though. They reeled in a few decent bluegills, got to watch them be released back into the pond, and were having an excellent time throughout the whole night. And my little Abby got to watch it all, and take it all in as well. Hopefully she logs it, and uses it in the future.
It was one excellent evening outside, and I still cannot believe we haven’t fished until now. It is a shame that life gets in the way sometimes.
Don’t we all need to make more time to fish????

I love seeing the kids fishing. So much fun. Soon it will by your little one. And yes life does get in the way sometimes.
Yes, and then another, yes we do need to take more time to go fishing. I agree many things have taken priority over something that is just good for the soul. Fishing with kids is a lifetime memory maker. Thanks for the post, Arthur.
