Lake Sturgeon, in our great state of Michigan, are listed as a threatened species; you can only catch and keep them legally in a few area waters: Black Lake in Cheboygan county, Otsego Lake in Otsego County, Lake St. Clair, and in the St. Clair River.
Sturgeon can live for up to 100 years, but are very slow to reproduce – sometimes taking up to 15 to 20 years to reach sexual maturity for males, and 20 to 25 years for females. Considering those facts, it is no wonder the DNR keep a close tab on these fish, and only allow them to be kept from certain waters.
Apparently none of those facts matter to this guy, though.
This gentleman was fishing below the Fourth Street dam, near Grand Rapids, when he hooked this nice looking sturgeon. He should have taken a picture and released it, but instead decided to plop it into the back of his newer model silver-gray GMC pickup – that has a white toolbox behind the cab.
Bystanders even warned the man about what he was doing, but to no avail. He still drove off with his illegal catch. And now the DNR is asking for all of our help. If you know the gentleman in these photos, the Michigan DNR is asking that you help identify him. They are also offering up a $1000 reward for your troubles.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Report All Poaching Hotline at 1-800-292-7800.
Please, if you have any information, help your Michigan DNR find this gentleman. He needs to be held accountable for his very poor judgement.

This is something I just don’t understand. People that could care less. Funny thing is look at all the people around him and they got pictures. How stupid!
Good luck, I hope they catch him.
If this guy knew it was illegal, he is ignorant. If I caught that fish, I wouldn’t know; but it sounds like there were plenty of people around that did know. What’s the point of keeping a fish that is a threatened species if you already have a picture. He wasn’t starving if he drove away in a nice truck. This kind of ignorance is what gives outdoorsmen a bad wrap.
If this guy claims to be a fisherman, he needs to be culled out of the herd. Hope they run him down.
Once again, we as sportsman shoot ourselves in the foot.. Thus creating more rules for us to abide by….
There is no excuse for ignorance – but I can be a little more lenient towards it. But, blatant, stupid, disregard for laws and ethics is unreal. Hope he pays the price for being short on brain cells.
What an idiot. I sure hope he will be caught hand hopefully they throw the books at him. It’s ignorant folks like that, that are used by the media to paint us all in the same color.
Here in British Columbia we have sturgeons in the Faser River and they are protected (catch-and-release only). I used to live on the Fraser River and always wanted to fish these giants but somehow never got around to do it. One day I will though.
I sure would love to have an extra $1000 for turning this moron in!!!
There is always at least one idiot in every group that makes everyone else look bad…
