A Match made in Heaven?
She's a vegetarian. He's a hunter. You would think the two of them would never work - but, surprisingly, here they were on the dance floor sharing their first dance as husband and wife. I was intrigued. Of the two people mentioned above, I only know the vegetarian - and, honestly, I don't know her very well.  I was still intrigued, though, and not because she's a vegetarian - anyone w...
First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. This time...
Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...

It’s snowing…..again. Here’s some MDNR Tidbits in the Meantime!

snow_shovel2.jpgI hate winter.

Okay, so maybe I don’t hate winter all the time, but for right now I do. We have been getting snow nearly every day for about a week. And I’m not talking just a little bit of snow, either, I’m talking about 6 inches or more at a time, including a dumping of about 8 inches or more on Saturday.

Now usually I wouldn’t complain about snow, but when it starts accumulating this much it really tends to put a damper on all outside hunting activities. We planned a rabbit hunt for Sunday, but that sure wasn’t going to work – unless we went out and bought snowshoes of course.

I would love to shed hunt, but it’s a little early for that. And how am I suppose to find a shed, anyway, in the 14 or so inches we have on the ground right now. We have another 2 to 5 inches coming tonight, so, at this rate, we might not have a melt off good enough to allow shed hunting until mid-July!!!! Let it snow, let it snow I guess!

In the meantime I figured I could do a few things – that make me feel outdoorsy – that doesn’t involve shoveling snow.

The first thing I can do – as well as all of you Michigan turkey hunters – is apply for your turkey permit. You have until February 1st to get that done, and the results will be available March 2. For those of you who would like to hunt the Guaranteed Hunt Period (May 4th-31st), you can actually buy that license over-the-counter until February 1st without having to pay the application fee. I still haven’t decided which date I would like yet, so I’m contemplating that. I only have a few weeks left, though, to make my decision, so I need to do that soon. If you want more turkey hunting and/or licensing/application information you can go here.

The other thing you Michigan hunters can do – to get over all the snow we’ve been getting – is to provide the DNR with some input. They are looking for input on a few different issues: Crossbow hunting, The Calkins Bridge Dam, The Black Bear Management Plan, and the State Forest Management Plan.

All of these issues the DNR is asking for input on. There is a survey they would like you to fill out involving crossbow hunting in Michigan, they have a link to send email comments on the Bear Management plan here, and there is also a press release that explains what they would like to know in regards to the Calkins Bridge Dam on the Kalamazoo River.

Hopefully, once we are done filling out these surveys, and sending email comments about things that are important to us, the snow might be melted enough to allow for a rabbit or shed hunt. I’m not holding my breath, though, this is Michigan after all.

Man am I glad we bought that 4 wheel drive.

I’m sick and tired of the cold! Last winter wasn’t too bad I just put Sugar in her car seat, covered her up with blankets and we were off – this winter… coats and hats and scarves and blankets and I’m saying Enough Already!

Spring really is just around the corner though… I have to keep reminding myself of that!

  2. They were calling for a blizzard last night and we got just a little bit of snow. We’ve had more snow already this year than we’ve had in years.

I really do hate winter – always have. But this year has been ridiculous…like you said, it really puts a damper on any hunting. Coyotes don’t want to trudge through two feet of snow anymore than we do and besides that, you can’t drive anywhere to get to public land when there is that much snow. I’m ready for spring!

The only time I care for snow is during deer season and christmas day, other than that I don’t care for it.
