2008 is over, and 2009 has already been rung in. And with that I figure it is time to stop thinking about last season, and move on to the 2009 hunting seasons.
First off, all of us Michigan hunters only have until the end of February to get our turkey hunting applications turned in. Jeff always waits and buys the left-over permits – that always seem to be available – but I’m always afraid of taking that chance. So I will spend my 4 dollars and turn in my application. I am kind of having a dilemma this year though: Whether to do the early hunt like I always do, or go with the late hunt that allows for a little more time to hunt. It seems like a no-brainer, but the birds tend to be a little more cooperative in the early season. I’m still leaning towards allowing myself a little more time to bag my first bird this year, though, and going with the later season. I guess we will just have to wait and see what I select when I submit my app.
2009 still holds one other great hunting opportunity as well: Rabbit hunting. As you can tell from the post yesterday, Jeff and a few others have already been out chasing after the bunnies. Unfortunately, Friday morning I awoke to a very unpleasant vomiting surprise and haven’t been outside at all in the last 3 days, otherwise, I would have been right out there with them. Rabbit season (small game) goes until the end of March, and you can be sure that all of us will be getting out again to chase bunnies as soon as we can.
As you can see, just because deer season is over doesn’t mean that hunting, or thinking about hunting, has to stop. We will be out rabbit hunting in the next few months, and we will also be out scouting for turkey/deer in the next few months as well. In fact, rabbit hunting the property you turkey, or deer hunt, can make for a great scouting trip as well.
I’m looking forward to 2009, and starting the hunting slate over. There are plenty of chances to get outside in the next few months…….and I haven’t even mentioned fishing or steelheading yet.

I must agree about “wiping the slate clean” and starting over new in 2009.
Looking forward to hearing about everyones 2009 experiences in the world of Simply Outdoors.
That is a great way to think about it. There is always something to do when it comes to hunting.
Good luck this year.
The outdoors is a great year-round playground. It’s one of Sugar’s favorite places to be “outside” unfortunately it’s too cold and yucky for her to be out much right now!
Yuck to be sick! Glad to hear you are feeling better and good luck with your 2009 season!
The hunt never ends… Good luck!
