A Match made in Heaven?
She's a vegetarian. He's a hunter. You would think the two of them would never work - but, surprisingly, here they were on the dance floor sharing their first dance as husband and wife. I was intrigued. Of the two people mentioned above, I only know the vegetarian - and, honestly, I don't know her very well.  I was still intrigued, though, and not because she's a vegetarian - anyone w...
First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. This time...
Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...

Tyler’s 1st Rabbit

Posted By: jeff on January 5, 2009 in Hunting, Rabbit - Comments: 8 Comments »

023.JPGWell I had a few hours to kill before heading over to my cousins house to rock in the new year..So what else is there better to do than “RABBIT HUNT”

My new brother in-law was up from Oklahoma – where he is stationed – so we figured we would go shoot some bunnies. My son who is 10 has never been before so this was his 1st trip hunting rabbits. He has his own Ruger 10-22 so he was ready to go! The place we hunted 1st is one of our favorite places to hunt rabbits and has produced big time in the past. This time was no different.

One of the 1st brush piles we hit Tyler got his 1st shot at a rabbit and connected perfect! As any kid would be he was 026.JPGexcited to get his 1st and now is hooked for life! This spot ended up producing one-a-piece for Wes, Tyler and I. I ended up getting one more, from another property we hunt (thanks to the Stevens Family), which made 4 total for the day.

It sure was nice getting back out rabbit hunting. With all this cold weather we have had the cabin fever was starting to get to me. It also was the 1st time I have got to hunt with Wes and let me tell you we had a blast!

UPDATE!

Managed to get out on Saturday with my son Tyler and Matt. Matt ended up getting his 1st rabbit ever! I have to give him props after trying to shoot his foot off when one on the rabbits ran straight at him and went between his legs..lol! The 1st part of the day was real slow, but we did end up hitting a spot that produced about 12 rabbits in about an hour! Talk about having a blast! To bad we couldn’t hit those fast little bunnies(.22′s are tough) We did end up with 3, so that’s 7 for the freezer! We were so tired from hunting 8 hours that wwe forgot to get pics.

Sounds like a lot of fun with the kids… I have never been much of a small game hunter, but with two boys that are crazy about hunting ANYTHING, I believe we are going to have to go kick some brush piles to keep them entertained now that deer season is over!
