A Match made in Heaven?
She's a vegetarian. He's a hunter. You would think the two of them would never work - but, surprisingly, here they were on the dance floor sharing their first dance as husband and wife. I was intrigued. Of the two people mentioned above, I only know the vegetarian - and, honestly, I don't know her very well.  I was still intrigued, though, and not because she's a vegetarian - anyone w...
First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. This time...
Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...

Back to the Land of Four Wheel Drive

Posted By: Arthur on January 2, 2009 in Ramblings - Comments: 8 Comments »

idodgenitro2007rtredright06feb.jpgWith the US automakers in the state they’re in, and since my wife’s Corolla’s lease was almost up, we decided to do our part to help the local manufacturers out.  Plus, by doing that, we were able to put ourselves back in a little bigger vehicle that actually has four wheel drive.

About a year ago I sold my four wheel drive truck, and picked up a Ford Taurus, because the gas prices were so high.  I thought that really was the right thing to do, but with the way the weather is around here, and after a couple incidences where we couldn’t get to where we needed to go for hunting, or otherwise, I started to miss the four wheel drive like crazy.

We went and started looking around last friday, and eventually stumbled across a few Dodge Nitros.  And I’m proud to say that we are the proud parents of a red one……with four wheel drive.

It is actually a great little vehicle:  It’s big enough for all of us to fit comfortably in, provides the “sitting up” feeling that I associate with a truck, and still packs enough punch to get you up and moving with its V-6 engine.  It also has true four wheel drive, not all wheel drive, and can tow a boat, or whatever we want to haul up to 5600lbs.  Perfect!

I can’t even begin to tell you how good it feels to have a four wheel drive vehicle.  I know I did the right thing by getting rid of the truck, but I would have given my right arm for that truck payment a couple of times.  Just a week ago I couldn’t hardly get into my cousins driveway because we had the car, and one night, when we were in a blinding snowstorm, I would have given anything to have the truck payment as well.

Needless to say, we are very happy with the vehicle and we’re looking forward to the next few years of driving it.  I can’t wait to pack it full of gear, and head out fishing, or hunting, or whatever our little four wheel drive hearts desire.

  1. Congrats on the new car. After being in a larger car or truck it’s hard to get use to being in a smaller one.

I won’t be without 4-wheel drive… hopefully my little Explorer holds out for a couple more years – it’s not as nice as the big truck but it keeps me going when I have to during the bad weather we get!

The important question is – does a deer bit in the back? :)

Good looking rig, Arthur! I am sure you will put it to good use. Congratulations.

Sweet! It is a bad feeling to need four wheel drive and not have it. Looks great!

Art I am so happy to see that shiny red AMERICAN car. I just sold my ford ranger, and have been looking to replace it for two months. Reality set in though, as our budget couldn’t handle $450 dollar s a month truck payments. I ended up with a ford focus (33 mpg) and hauled my “last minute deer” in the trunk of my wifes Mercury Milan. Don’t worry I had it wrapped in a tarp! Now I’m looking for a “beater truck” to use strictly for hunting. Once you’ve owned a pick up, it’s hard to live without one. Keep your money in country “BUY AMERICAN!”

    Congratulations on your new 4X4!

They are a must here at Timber Life with our 1/2 mile drive and extreme weather happenings. Even 4X4′s have their limits. ;)
