Kristine, from the Hunt Smart, Think Safety blog, as well as the OBS blog, issued a Write About the Good Challenge last week, and I figured I might as well take up that challenge, here, on this Thanksgiving Eve.
The whole premise of Kristine’s challenge is to write about the person who inspired you to blog, or the person who inspired you to hunt or fish. To be honest, I have already written a post that covered this very topic, but in the spirit of the challenge I figured I would give everyone a refresher.
I have had many hunting and fishing mentors. In fact, in my family hunting and fishing have always been a way of life. I can remember fishing with my dad and brother from when I was real young, and although we didn’t start seriously hunting until later in our lives, we dabbled in many forms of hunting early on as well. The hunting bug was planted early in my brother by my uncle and my dad, and over the years Jeff just went hog wild with it.
As I grew older it always seemed that Jeff and I were hunting and fishing together. I don’t think we’ve missed an opener of bow or gun season in at least 10 years. And during the bass season opener a few years back, Jeff made it very memorable by hooking me in the face.
I guess the bottom line is that hunting and fishing in our family has always been a family affair. It started with parents, and uncles, and it has just proceeded to go on down the line: First to us, and now to our kids.
On this Thanksgiving Eve I am thankful that our family has been so deeply rooted in the hunting and fishing heritage. And despite my negative tone towards hunting as of late, I still love it, and wouldn’t trade any of the hunting memories I’ve accumulated over the years.
With this post I don’t want to spotlight one particular person as a hunting mentor – even though Jeff and I have spent the most time in the woods, and on the water together – I just want to say that I am thankful to be raised in a family that shared their love of hunting and fishing with me.
For that, I will always be thankful, and I’m sure all of us will generate many more memories in the years to come.

Family is a wonderful thing… It is especially wonderful when families know how to enjoy things together!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, your wife and your beautiful little Abby!
I can say I dont remember ever missing a bow/gun opener since I started hunting at 12 years old! The one thing I do miss doing with the family is Pheasant hunting..At one time we would never miss the opener! but with the lack of birds and deer hunting it just kinda stopped..
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and good luck hunting.
