Opening Day: One Mission Accomplished

Info

As Jeff pointed out yesterday, opening day was very good to young Tyler.  He managed to bail out his dad, and put down his first deer.  I was happy for Tyler and it provided for at least somewhat of a climatic ending to a pretty boring opening day – boring for me anyway.

I snuck into the homemade box blind about a half hour before sunrise, and kicked back.  The blind was great and was doing an awesome job of keeping me dry.  The morning brought rain that lasted for quite a few hours, and I was glad to be in a blind that provided some protection from the elements.

As the sun rose I started to hear the first shots of the morning.  I waited, and waited, and waited, but the deer just weren’t cooperating.  Jeff had already saw a couple by this point -  and even though there were all kinds of shots around us – the deer just weren’t heading to my area of the property.  Such is my luck lately.

Finally, around 2pm, I spotted my first deer.  They were running through the tall grass, but as far away as they were, I might as well have not saw them.  Even if I had had a rifle there was still absolutely no chance of taking any of them home.  And that was the last deer sighting for me that day.

The one positive thing that did come from this day was this:  I sat all day!  Yep, a goal that I had set a few years ago was finally accomplished.  I sat from dawn til dusk, from dark to dark.  I’m not saying it was easy, and I’m not saying there wasn’t times I wanted to bail, but I did it, and it felt good.  It is pretty interesting to be on stand all day.  You get to see a lot of things (not deer), and I also managed to figure out that the spot I set would be a great spot for turkey season next year.  I had five Toms within 15yds of me, and I was wishing it was late April.  I definitely made a mental note of that.  I also realized, that after an all day sit,  your feet feel like to big ole bricks when you try to walk.  They were a little cold, but I didn’t really realize how cold they were, until I tried to use them.  It was pretty funny.

It was one of the slowest opening days I’ve been a part of in quite awhile, but I did manage to accomplish the sitting all day goal.  Now I have to wait until the end of the week before I can hunt again.  That’s the negative side, but the positive is that I have all next week off.

Maybe then the deer will start to cooperate.

  • I have had them slow days before and they really do stink but, I look at it like a good day off in the woods with nature and the fresh air.

  • Well hopefully you will have better luck the coming weekend.

  • Congrats on staying all day; sorry it didn’t pay off with a deer! Maybe when you’re off next week you should sit all day all week; just kidding! Good luck.

  • During antelope season this year we sat all day for three days in a row – and I certainly can understand what you went through! It’s neat to see what you can see – but at the same time…oofta, that makes for a long day!

  • Sitting all day… you’re one tough bugger. I’ve done it in an antelope blind, but the longest I’ve sat in a tree is a few hours over a bear bait. Hardcore.

  • I kind of look at it like the more hours I put in hunting, each hour increases my odds of seeing a big buck. And with life being so fast paced these days any day in the woods is better than a day at work. I hope you get you a big one next week.
