A Whole New Hunting Mind
Recently I've been reading Daniel Pinks', A Whole New Mind, and it's quite intriguing.  It came as recommended reading from my boss at work, and I was intrigued by the concept of the book right from the start. Basically, the idea behind the book is that most of us - from a young age - are instructed to pursue left-brained careers - computer programming and accounting to name a few - when, actu...
SOTV: ‘09 Turkey Hunts
Last year, Jeff and I were both successful in our turkey hunting pursuits - Jeff shot a nice jake, and I shot my first bird - a jake - as well.  And we were lucky enough to capture both of those hunts on film too. I love sharing these videos with all of you, and I love them for selfish reasons as well.  It's just great to, not only be able to re-live the moment in your mind, but also to be ab...
Sponsor On-Board
It's been one heck of a month here at SimplyOutdoors, and it just keeps getting better.  I'm very proud and pleased to announce that we have our first sponsor - Cottage Craft Works. Cottage Craft Works make all kinds of unique things - hand-made furniture, fishing lures, custom gun stocks, toys and, of course, my personal favorite, hunting calls.  They make box calls, slate calls, owl hoots, ...
Walks: Getting Outside Anyway We Can
Sure, a lot of the sidewalks are a muddy mess, and a few of them are quite treacherous - ice-covered and very slick from the snow that has melted during the day and then re-froze at night.  But that hasn't kept the wife, Abby, or myself from enjoying a walk the last couple evenings. It's interesting this time of the year as well.  On one end it's great to see the snow disappearing and the sta...
Michigan’s Changing of the Seasons
I walked out the back door yesterday afternoon - to take out the trash - and I was promptly met by spring.  This weekend the weather has been unbelievable, especially considering that we were ice fishing just last weekend; we hit the 50 degree mark yesterday, and we're supposed to be in the high 40's, low 50's all week this week.  So much for ice fishing, I guess. What I experienced this week...

A boys 1st Deer and Bailing out Dad

Posted By: jeff on November 17, 2008 in Deer Hunt Reports, Hunting - Comments: 5 Comments »

test-024.jpgWell I will give you another short story!

Opening morning the boy and I had passed up a couple small bucks just out of his bow range. We got a little cold so we headed back up to the truck to warm up for an hour or so.. We got back on stand about 1pm and at about 1:20 had a big doe come through at about 50 yards! As I was about to shoot the big doe she gets my wind and takes off!! So in the heat of the moment I make a bad choice and shoot at the smaller doe that was with her(thought it was bigger)..1st shot..clean miss! 2nd shot the deer drops in its tracks in the tall grass! Thinking its a done deal I unload my gun and start to get down when all of a sudden the deer come running right back at us

I tell my boy who has his bow to get ready-she stops at about 10 yards and he puts a great shot on her! She runs off about  20 yards and goes down for good. The only problem was she is a he!!!! Thats right folks, I almost shot a button buck! When we go to get him you can see that I hit just above the spine hitting no vitals.  Now why he went down and sat there for 5 minutes I have no clue.  But in the end my boy gets his 1st deer and its with his bow!

Talk about not hearing the end of it from my friends and my son! I would have been mad that I shot a BB but the story had a great ending for a 10 year old boy and his bow..from now on its a HUGE DOE or nothing

Well… at least your boy was there to bail you out! :)

Just for the record…After looking the deer over my hit was more of a “graze” than anything..and the deer would have survived with no problems..So I’m glad Tyler finally got his chance..

  4. Cute story and congrats to Tyler.

  5. Maybe you and Art should have let Tyler shoot the Cinderblock Smash tournament! With that kind of pressure to bail out dad, he would have whipped all of us at the tournament! Congrats Tyler, Way to go! You’ve done better than me, I have yet to take one with my bow!
