Lack of Respect
With the new day breaking, I walked the bank of the Pere Marquette, looking for my first honey hole of the morning.  It was beautiful – the sun’s rays bouncing off the banks, bringing new life to the early spring forage - but, as I walked along, something on the trail ahead caught my eye. WTF? A beer can.  And another beer can.  I hate trash! It amazes me as to how little respect s...
First Hawaiian Island Adventure
For those of you that regularly follow Simply Outdoors'  blog you know that I recently relocated to Hawaii. It has been a hectic and crazy summer to say the least, but I did finally get to experience my first "island edition" outdoor excursion recently. Words and pictures probably won't give the experience its due justice, but here it goes anyways. The day trip was planned to consist of a hike...
Another Mounted Buck for Justin
Our SimplyOutdoor Pro Staffer, Justin, had a great deer season last year.  And if you need to be reminded as to how "great" it was, you can click here. But, even though all of us completely remember how great his season was, and because Justin is the complete jerk that he is, he likes to send pictures months after the season in order to continue to rub it in. The picture in this post is of ...
Primal Thoughts
The corn is shoulder high, farmers are harvesting their wheat crop already, tomorrow it is supposed to be ninety degrees, and yet all I can think about is fall. It’s always interesting to see what triggers the senses and summons that primal hunting urge within.  The corn stalks glistening in the morning sun caught my eye this morning, as well as the morning sun’s reflection on the tractor ...
Role Reversal
After stumbling across this picture, I'm starting to get a little concerned.  I know that bears inhabit many of the woods around us, and while their population may be small in my area of Michigan, if they are starting to get this smart I might need to be careful when scouting, hunting, or simply heading to my treestand. And, Mike, my fellow Michigan hunting blog friend and bear hunter, you and...

Sunday Sickness….and then it Snowed!

Posted By: Arthur on November 10, 2008 in Deer Hunt Reports, Hunting - Comments: 5 Comments »

snow-covered-daffodils-3-21-06.jpgWe definitely had an interesting weekend of hunting.

Saturday morning was pretty good, except for the fact that the buck I had coming on a string to my grunt call, decided to turn at 50 yards, and follow the scent of a doe who had taken the same route about 15 minutes before his arrival.  That pretty much fit right into my luck with deer these days.  He was huffing it through the swamp though.  I couldn’t believe the amount of racket he was making on his way to me, but it just wasn’t meant to be, and he followed his, um, ya know, heart instead.  Ya, his heart:)

Jeff and Tyler had a couple close calls, but they just couldn’t close the deal.  Tyler had a few close encounters this year, but the nerves have been getting the best of him.  He hasn’t missed or anything, but he has been shaking so much that the deer are actually picking up on the movement; those ten year old nerves are hard to get under control and the deer were using it to their advantage.

We sat in the rain on Saturday night-for nothing I might add-and then on Sunday morning I woke up feeling like crap.  Then the puking began.  Great, my last day of bowhunting before gun season and here I am throwing up.  If it weren’t for bad luck……..

So, needless to say I didn’t get out yesterday.  Jeff and Tyler did though, and had quite a few encounters of the deer kind.  And it snowed.  You read that right.  Yesterday, it snowed here in our neck of the woods.  I’m talking I-had-to-clean-off-the-car-this-morning kind of snow.  It isn’t even Thanksgiving yet, and it’s already snowing here in the Great Lake state.  Nice!

Jeff will be out this week, but unfortunately I can’t get out until this weekend.  Saturday is our gun opener and you can bet that Jeff and I will be out trying our luck once again.  The weather forecast is not looking good at all:  Rain and wind.  But we will still be heading out and seeing what we can do.  You never know, the weather can change daily around here.

There is still plenty of time left, and hopefully gun season is good to me this year.  This weekend is probably my best chance, but if that doesn’t pull through, I do have the second week off.  Maybe I will save myself and shoot a Thanksgiving buck.

Only time will tell I guess.

Sorry to hear you got sick. That would be fantastic if that elusive buck came into gun range on Thanksgiving Day. What a way that would be to give Thanks! One for the day and the other for the antler rack that will grace the wall. ;)

  2. Sorry to hear you were sick and the weather wasn’t good. Gun starts here this weekend as well. I think my hunter is leaving tomorrow for a week of hunting.

Hopefully you will have better luck in the coming week.

Ugh – I hate the stomach flu…but if it kept me from the last day of bow season, I think I’d hate it even more. Bummer…on the bright side, there’s nothing wrong with giving a buck a little indigestion from lead, either. Good luck during gun season.

Bummer that the ol’ buck had to follow his heart – typical sensitive male. Just doing what his tender little heart tells him to do. Us guys get such an undeserved bad rep…when really it’s just us being sensitive and caring.

    :D

Ugh – sorry you had such a cruddy weekend – hopefully your luck starts turning better this weekend!

Oh and the whole following your heart thing… well look what it got you, Little Abby :) OK, I’d better leave that alone now!

Good luck this weekend, I hope you get yourself a big ole buck!
