Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

No Outdoor Stuff Here…..

And that is the way it has to be right now.

We have some footage of a couple young bucks fighting.  But Jeff hasn’t gotten me that footage yet.  We also have the footage of the buck that Jeff’s son had a chance at a few weekends ago, but I can barely stay awake to write this post.  So, needless to say, that isn’t happening tonight.

The only hunting action I’m seeing right now is on The Outdoor Channel.  That is giving me my outdoor fix for the moment.  I have to live vicariously through everyone else for awhile until we all get settled into the new baby routine.

I was thinking that this might make my hunting season turn out good.  Because I love hunting so much, I think I tend to over hunt my stands from time to time.  Well, I won’t have to worry about that this year.  I think that is a good thing.  And since little Abby arriving is going to keep me out of my stands for awhile, it is also going to keep me motivated to sit longer the times I do get to go out.  I think those two things could be a recipe for success.

For now though, my outdoor life consists of washing hunting clothing; baby hunting clothing that is.  My life is laundry, housework, and all around helping with this new baby stuff.

And for all of you reading this and wondering:  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Hunting will be around for many years to come, and there is still plenty of season left.  Abby’s first few days, on the other hand, will only be here once.

I am certainly not going to miss them.

Yep, you sound like a new Dad to me :)

  2. Jen says:

Your doing what is right for your family. Nobody could ask for more!
I know the feeling of not getting to go out much. But when you finally get out you do enjoy it that much more.
Keep up the good work! Soon it will all be routine.

  3. Just make sure when you do go out in your stand that you’ve had some sleep first. We wouldn’t want you dozing off in the stand.

  4. Jeff says:

Like you said, hunting can wait. You are getting to enjoy one of life’s biggest blessing right now!
And I assure you, one of these days Jen is going to flat out tell you to go hunting… she will have gotten her routine all set, and you will be in the way at some point. So just keep enjoying it while you can – those undisturbed stands will be there when you get that chance, and the bucks that haven’t been pressured will be too!

I’ve been out of town hunting deer for a few days, Arthur, so I haven’t gotten the chance to congratulate you on the little one! That’s awesome! Hope Abby and Momma are doing well!

  6. Ahhh, the joy of fatherhood! Enjoy it while you can, soon they will be trying to get you to switch to duck hunting and just trying your patience in general!

  7. Phillip says:

Arthur, you won’t regret a moment you spend with that young’un… and you will likely regret every moment you don’t spend, especially in these early years.

Like you said, there’s a whole lifetime of hunting ahead of you. Your priorities are right on!

  8. Cory Glauner says:

Good for you. Spend that time with your family. It goes fast. You can hunt next year.

  9. CDGardens says:

What a great help you are to Jen! A wonderful way for you all to get into a rountine soon. ;)

I think this is a hint for me me to get the footage to you!….The part I find funny about this post is by the time you get out hunting I will already hunted all your stands and there wont be anymore deer left for you!..lol

I’m sure you will be there for the rut!
