Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

Opening Day: Come and Gone

Posted By: Arthur on October 2, 2008 in Deer Hunt Reports, Hunting - Comments: 8 Comments »

Well, the rain held off for us yesterday.  Weatherwise, it probably was one of the best days we’ve had for opening day in quite along time.  Even though I didn’t see a deer I still enjoyed every minute in stand.

Jeff and Corrin had an eventful morning and saw plenty of deer.  They both had a missed opportunity, but that is just the way hunting goes sometimes.  It wasn’t all negative though.  I think all of you hunters know, that even the negative hunting experiences, always teach us something.  We take those moments and turn them into knowledge that we can take into the field the next time.  No time spent in the wild is wasted, and nothing in the wild goes to waste.

It was still a great opener, and we got plenty of exercise in.  We also managed to find a couple more good treestand spots in our travels.

An opening day we won’t forget.  It felt great to be in stand again, and it was great to be able to enjoy a day of hunting with family.

I won’t be able to get out again until this weekend–that is, of course, if we aren’t in the hospital trying to have a baby.

Glad to hear you had a good opening day even if you didn’t get the chance to bring one down.

Only time will tell how the weekend will unfold. ;)

Artur, you said this and that explains it in a nut shell. (I think all of you hunters know, that even the negative hunting experiences, always teach us something. We take those moments and turn them into knowledge that we can take into the field the next time. No time spent in the wild is wasted, and nothing in the wild goes to waste).

    Good luck next time out.

Good luck this weekend – with hunting or having a baby…whichever it is you happen to be doing!

If you’re not willing to learn from negative experiences, you may as well not go out any more. Good luck.

Sounds like the opener I had Art, but I’m sure our weekends are going to be different. Life is about to change for you dramatically young man. Soak it all in. Enjoy it to the “max” and cherish your wife and family like there’s no tomorrow. Be very blessed my friend.

It’s always great to be out in the woods no matter how many deer you see – or don’t see!

I spent my opening day in hot, humid weather from sunup to sun down and didn’t see my first deer until 5:00pm. I never got a shot that day, but it was great just being out there.

Good luck the rest of your season! Keep us posted when you get the big one!
