Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

Youth Hunt 2008

Posted By: Arthur on September 26, 2008 in Deer Hunt Reports, Hunting - Comments: 6 Comments »

boys.jpgThis weekend is the Youth Hunt for this season.  It should be a good one.  We are all hoping that the weather cooperates, lets us get out hunting, and allows a chance for the kids to bag their first deer.

I know a lot of people frown upon the Youth Hunt, but I for one am a staunch supporter.  I think allowing the kids to get our early only escalates their chances of shooting their first deer.  And who could be against that?

I also do not think this early firearm youth season really affects the deer movement that much.  Of course there is the potential to scare off a wily ‘ole buck a little early in the season, but I think the benefits definitely outweigh the drawbacks.  I think the possibility of scaring off a buck is worth the risk if it gets another youth involved in hunting.  That is my take on the situation anyway.

So, we will have three youth hunters out this weekend.  I know come Monday we will have a great report, kill or no kill, but I do hope that one of the youngsters does manage to put their first deer down.  That would be very cool.

  1. Good luck. I hope you have some good stories come Monday.

  2. I hope they all have a good time.

People frown on the youth hunt?! That sounds pretty selfish. I’m all for it – get the youngsters hooked early! Look forward to some reports on the season.

  4. Jeff says:

Arthur, I am with you. I think that the youth seasons are great. It not only helps get young people in the woods, it makes it easier for moms and dads to take them since they can’t hunt/shoot anyway. It also gives kids a chance to hunt with little pressure and in a much safer environment since their are a lot fewer hunters in the woods.

  5. Blessed says:

I’m all for Youth Hunts! Good luck to the young ones you are taking on this hunt… it won’t be long and you’ll get to be taking Abby! :)

  6. Good luck, I hope all three bag a deer. If not, I know it will be a weekend to remember. Unfortunately I didn’t get any of our kids out this weekend. Too Busy. I hope to get out for the archery opener on Wednesday.
