A Match made in Heaven?
She's a vegetarian. He's a hunter. You would think the two of them would never work - but, surprisingly, here they were on the dance floor sharing their first dance as husband and wife. I was intrigued. Of the two people mentioned above, I only know the vegetarian - and, honestly, I don't know her very well.  I was still intrigued, though, and not because she's a vegetarian - anyone w...
First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. This time...
Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...

Early Doe Season Update

Posted By: Arthur on September 22, 2008 in Deer Hunt Reports, Hunting - Comments: 7 Comments »

The early doe season has came and went.

Honestly, I didn’t get out as much as I would have wanted to.  And if we’re being honest, I just didn’t have the drive that I normally do for hunting.  I’m not sure if it was the fact of knowing that I couldn’t shoot a buck, or the fact that it was warm, very warm, but something just didn’t feel the same for me; the drive just wasn’t there.

I did get out on Friday night, and it felt great to be back in the woods again.  It was unfortunate that on my way in, as I looked down and noticed some very fresh tracks, that I was met my three sets of deer eyes.  They didn’t stick around for long, even though I froze like a statue, and I knew at that point that my hunt wasn’t going to be that productive from then on.  I  should have known that I was cursed that night when I was halfway to my hunting area and realized I had left something at home.

I also ventured out on Saturday morning.  The weather was great, but too warm again.  And the wind was not right for any of my stands, but I still tried to be optimistic and give it a go in one of our stands that can have deer passing by from multiple directions, but it just wasn’t to be.  And I didn’t see any deer on Saturday morning either.

Jeff had a few encounters, but no kills, and my cousin got two small bucks on film, that hopefully, I can get posted later this week.  But we didn’t get any kills over the weekend.

Next week we have the Youth Hunt, and then the Wednesday after that opening day of bow season will be officially upon us.

I cannot wait.  Opening day of season just has a very different feeling for me then this early doe season has.  It will not be long and it will be here.

The hunting never seems quite the same when it’s hot out – I understand! Hopefully it cools off before regular season starts.

Certainly, adjusting to something different can take a while. It would probably be more fun to have a late doe season when we associate time of year with activity – cooler weather. ;)

All in all you saw deer moving and know they aren’t being shy.

  3. My hunter has been saying that the past few years – the weather is just too warm. That is why he agreed to our fishing trip.

We are suppose to have a hot week here this week and cooler by the weekend. Hopefully you will have a better feeling by then.

Well I was all set to go out Sunday evening for a doe hunt but just before I was going to leave my plans got changed and I didn’t get to go. My wife kept applogizing to me for my hunt getting messed up. Honestly though it really didn’t break my heart that bad. I told her don’t worry about about it I will make up for it durning bow season. I also just wasn’t that motivated for this hunt but come Oct. 1st I will be since bow hunting it is the deer hunting that I truely love.

Sounds like your outlook on early doe season is a lot like mine. I don’t think I’ve ever gone hunting without leaving at least one thing at home!

My husband went out every night but Sunday and didn’t get a shot at anything eather. He was not to impressed with the weather and thought a late doe hunt would be much better too.
I got to go out with him on Saturdy night and we got a set of twin fawns on film just for the fun of it, But that was all we got to see.
