Lack of Respect
With the new day breaking, I walked the bank of the Pere Marquette, looking for my first honey hole of the morning.  It was beautiful – the sun’s rays bouncing off the banks, bringing new life to the early spring forage - but, as I walked along, something on the trail ahead caught my eye. WTF? A beer can.  And another beer can.  I hate trash! It amazes me as to how little respect s...
First Hawaiian Island Adventure
For those of you that regularly follow Simply Outdoors'  blog you know that I recently relocated to Hawaii. It has been a hectic and crazy summer to say the least, but I did finally get to experience my first "island edition" outdoor excursion recently. Words and pictures probably won't give the experience its due justice, but here it goes anyways. The day trip was planned to consist of a hike...
Another Mounted Buck for Justin
Our SimplyOutdoor Pro Staffer, Justin, had a great deer season last year.  And if you need to be reminded as to how "great" it was, you can click here. But, even though all of us completely remember how great his season was, and because Justin is the complete jerk that he is, he likes to send pictures months after the season in order to continue to rub it in. The picture in this post is of ...
Primal Thoughts
The corn is shoulder high, farmers are harvesting their wheat crop already, tomorrow it is supposed to be ninety degrees, and yet all I can think about is fall. It’s always interesting to see what triggers the senses and summons that primal hunting urge within.  The corn stalks glistening in the morning sun caught my eye this morning, as well as the morning sun’s reflection on the tractor ...
Role Reversal
After stumbling across this picture, I'm starting to get a little concerned.  I know that bears inhabit many of the woods around us, and while their population may be small in my area of Michigan, if they are starting to get this smart I might need to be careful when scouting, hunting, or simply heading to my treestand. And, Mike, my fellow Michigan hunting blog friend and bear hunter, you and...

Hunting is in the Air.

Posted By: Arthur on August 19, 2008 in Hunting, Ramblings - Comments: 11 Comments »

If you’re a hunter, you know what I’m talking about.  If you’re not a hunter, you might not understand.

As I walked out the back door this morning, to head to work, I could already feel it.  I could feel the change coming.  That magical time of year when summer starts to turn into fall.  You can feel it in the air.  You can feel the marked coolness as the wind brushes across your face.  Most of us hunters can even smell the difference.  There is just something awesome about the fall air.  Maybe it is because the air becomes more dense.  I’m not sure what causes it, but us hunters can definitely detect the change.

Every time I come in contact with the first fall-like air, it always takes me back.  I can recount hunts from years past.  It also makes me think of all the sunrises and sunsets that I have encountered sitting in the fall breeze.  There is something very primal that is associated with this time of year.  I tend to get away from it for awhile, but the minute I get that first whiff of fall air, the senses are back on prime alert.  It is a great feeling.

I can’t wait for this year to get here.  I love the anticipation of every hunting season, but the fall deer season is still the one that really gets to me.  There is truly nothing like it in this whole world.  The air, the senses on full alert, the anticipation of what could be coming down the trail next, the sunrises, the sunsets, and the sure excitement of the hunt.

All of those things are brought on by one simple breath of air.  The breath that signifies to the soul that the hunting season is almost upon us.

  1. I love the fall weather and look forward to opening all the windows in the house and building a fire outside at night. I can also tell the change in my hunter when the fall is nearing. It’s the deer hunting behavior change.

Yep, I know exactly what you are talking about… and I’m watching the skies too, waiting for the teal to start the migration!

Most definitely a primal feeling, comes from within. The practice of hunting becomes engrained and we start looking for markers in the season to indicate when it is time to do it once more. ;)

A week ago tomorrow evening I saw a buck in velvet in the company of a doe. Then the other morning, before the light had come up all the way, I saw three deer,2 of which appeared to have antlers. Seeing things or is it “Buck Fever”?

I do know exactly what you mean. The smell in the air, the change in wind currents, the way the small critters like squirrels and chipmunks are running around. I too can just close my eye’s and be somewhere in my tree stand.

    It’s a great feeling

I completely understand. I haven’t experienced my first fall air, yet over here, but I have gotten my first fall smell of the year, though – and that is a start! It’s got to be coming right around the corner…seriously, I had chills reading that post – it got me all excited!! Glad to hear other places have already progressed to Fall air!

  6. Just yesterday evening, enjoying a glass of whisky on the front porch, I said to my wife, “Can you smell it, fall is coming!”

You’re right, besides the anticipation of the upcoming hunting season there is a certain smell in the air announcing the arrival fall.

For as long as I can think fall has been my favorite time of year. When the leaves change color from monotonous green to a rainbow of different colors, crop fields turn golden yellow and the morning mist dances gracefully in the air current then it is pure magic to be in outdoors.

And then there are of course all the past hunting memories with parents and friends reaching back almost a lifetime connected with the fall. Add to this the anticipation of new memories to be made just around the corner and everyone will understand why the fall is magic for the outdoors person.

Texas is still so hot and muggy right now. I can’t wait for mid October and the weather to change. I am really looking forward to hunting season and getting this baby havin’ behind me.

    How’s your wife doing?

  10. Arthur says:

The wife is doing good. She has two months left, but I think that she is ready anytime after right now:)
