Hunting/Fishing of Dreams
I’m not sure why, but I have been thinking about this lately. Where would I go, if money was no object, for the hunting or fishing trip of my dreams? I have many places that come to mind, but which one would be my top pick if I could only choose one, and I didn’t have to worry about how much it costs. This is a hard one.
I would absolutely love to black bear hunt somewhere. I was thinking maybe up in Ontario, or somewhere in that general vicinity. Heck, I wouldn’t even mind a black bear hunt in Northern Michigan, but since this is about money being no object, I wanted to set my goal a little higher.
I would also love to hunt Elk out in New Mexico, or Colorado maybe. That would be an absolute blast. Jeff and I could take a week off of work and head out west and chase some bugling beasts. I can already see the nice 6 X 6 mounted on my wall. I’m not sure my walls are big enough, but hey we are dreaming here right?
I would also love to hunt grizzly somewhere. I’m not sure where to be honest, but Alaska always seem to come to mind. I would of course be using my bow. That would be so nerve racking and oh so beautiful all at the same time. Can you imagine coming to full draw on a grizzly at a mere 20yds? I think I might need to bring extra underclothes for that trip. That would be a hunt that confirmed I was definitely alive!
Now lets talk about fishing. My ultimate fishing dream trip is to land a salmon in Alaska. Actually, to be honest, I don’t even need to land a fish for this trip to be worthwhile. I just want to be fly fishing in Alaska somewhere. It doesn’t have to be great weather, and I don’t even have to catch a fish, I just want to see my fly line touch the water in an Alaskan stream. We have planned this trip a couple of times, but sometimes life gets in the way and prevents things from happening. With a little one on the way, and getting prepared for that, the Alaskan trip is postponed for now, but it will come back again. Maybe next year? Only time will tell.
So those are a few of my favorite hunting and/or fishing trips that I would love to go on. I would love to hear from all of you what your dream outdoor trip would be. It doesn’t even have to include hunting or fishing, but it does have to involve the outdoors. If you do pick a hunting or fishing trip, I would love to hear what weapon you would use as well. So, if money was no object, where would you go for your ultimate outdoor vacation?

My husband would go on the Grizzly trip with you - he actually had a bow hunting trip planned once before we got married, then something happened and he didn’t get to go. I’ll leave the bear hunting - black or grizzly to others, that isn’t for me.
I would love to hunt waterfowl in Canada, elk in Colorado, antelope in Montana, upland birds in the Dakotas and I’m sure I could come up with some more places I’d love to go…
On Vacation? I want to tour the back country of Colorado, Nevada and the other western states visiting ghost towns and learning about them, visit Alaska and go see Italy and visit the town my family came from three generations ago.
I’d better stop now, this is turning into a post!
I am with you on the Elk hunting out West! I have ALWAYS wanted to do that trip…
I have also always wanted to do a big horn sheep hunt in Alaska, giant whitetails in Mexico/Canada, and an Oscillated turkey hunt on the Yucatan.
I also can’t forget about the African safari that I have dreamed about since I was a kid.
I’m sure Mark would go back up to Canada for another bear hunt.
I would love to rent a big fancy RV and drive to Colorado, Montana, etc. Oh and go to Kenny Chesneys island and have him sing me a few songs.
You’d do well to do the elk hunt - The invite is always open…come on out and we’ll take you, no guide service required. Of course, we wouldn’t be guaranteeing an elk, either, though! But we could guarantee a great time!
My dream hunt would have to be a Yukon moose hunt with my bow during the rut. I just can’t think of anything that sounds more exciting and beautiful as that.
Fishing trip - I agree with you. That’d work for me!
That western elk hunt isn’t that far out if you’re willing to shop around and if you’re not looking for a 400″ behemoth. You can do some great hunts in Colorado with over-the-counter tags. There are plenty of areas where an enterprising hunter can have good opportunities for success without spending the family fortune. You can go guided for a relatively reasonable rate, or you can go unguided for a real adventure and much less money.
For much of my life, an elk hunt in the Rockies was the perfect dream. One day I decided to quit stalling and make it happen. It was a lot easier than I’d expected, and not really too expensive even though I did go fully guided.
My next dream hunt is caribou. I’ll be putting a plan in place soon to make it a reality as well.
After that, I don’t know. The only unattainable (for normal folks of moderate means) dream hunt I can think of is to do the full safari experience on the scale of Roosevelt or Hemingway. You can book some hunts of a month or more, where you spend your time in the real bush and not inside a big fence… but it’ll cost ya.
Everything else.. if you can dream it, you can make it happen. Elk, bears, monster whitetails, moose… make a plan and do it!
My Dad is in Alaska right now for the next few months. He’s gone a few times before and loves the fishing. So far, according to him, the salmon aren’t running much, but he’s still having a good time.
I’m guessing you’d love Alaska. Judging from the pictures he brings back, it’s a beautiful place.
