Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

You just get that feeling…

flower1.jpgFall has always been my favorite time of year. I mean what more could you ask for in a season? Apple cider, fresh made donuts, football, salmon fishing, and of course, deer hunting. It is like the perfect combination of stimuli-from the indoors and ultimately, and most importantly, to the outdoors. With my love for fall I always tend to overlook the other seasons. Sure I do things in them that I enjoy, but they still pale in comparison to fall.

Winter always holds its grip on Michigan for longer than any of us would like it to. We all wait on pins and needles for the moment when winter breaks and spring arrives, yet somehow I always tend to overlook spring. It is not that I have anything against the season, it just always seems to arrive so late, doesn’t hang out for very long, and then summer arrives. That is just what we’ve grown accustomed to here in Michigan. We have two seasons normally–Winter and Summer. It is either 10 degrees or 90 degrees.

Somehow this season that all changed for me a bit. I actually looked around and noticed that spring had arrived. Sure it looks nasty, and the ground is always in shambles after a good snow melt off, but for some reason I actually stopped and appreciated spring. Maybe turkey hunting contributed to that and helped me to appreciate the season for what it is. Maybe it was just the pure fact that winter was so long this year, and I noticed spring’s arrival because I was so happy that it finally came.

There is nothing like finally being able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine after a long, cold winter. Wait, I think that was a Cinderella (the band) album, but I digress. There is nothing like finally being able to enjoy the outdoors after frigid temps for 3 or 4 months straight. Finally being able to grill out, walk the dog, and shoot the bow, all contribute to spring being my new 2nd favorite season. Everything is new, though ugly at times, and ready to be refreshed and renewed.

Of course there is one drawback…..I have to mow again!

  1. Fall is also my favorite time of year. Sweatshirts and football. I am enjoying spring more and more. I am finally starting to enjoy planting fresh vegetables and lots of flowers.

  2. Man do I hate to mow! I guess that is one of the reasons I had kids, gotta have someone to mow that yard! Seriously though, I know what you mean about spring, I’m Soooooo glad it is finally hear and the turkey’s are gobblin!

I agree with you, fall is my favorite time of year as well for all of the above reasons. The other seasons have their own sort of omviance to them but, I do prefer the leaves changing colors and the nip in the air and frost on the pumpkins.

  4. Winter was kind of long this year. I just started noticing leaves on the trees up here in the last few days, which is cool. The cherry blossoms are out too.

I don’t know how you do it up there. After a couple of months of being locked inside due to the snow, I think I would go crazy… I’m picturing Jack Nickolson in the Shinning type of crazy!
Glad Spring has arrived for you!

I love fall and spring, personally summer and winter aren’t too bad either… I will admit that after about the middle of January I’m ready for winter to just go away!

Fall is tough to beat just because of the hunting to be done – then when baseball playoffs are thrown into the mix, well, fall is great. The only downside of fall is that winter is coming – and summer is gone. Needless to say, I hate cold and snow (I won’t be moving to Michigan anytime soon!) Spring is nice with all the newness of life – and fishing season! Summer doesn’t hold much in the way of huntin’, but I love the weather and I love the fishin’.

  8. Matt says:

I enjoy the second half of the year, summer and fall, much more than the first half of the year. I’m thrilled that Memorial Day weekend comes early this year and that the traditional beginning of summer is only two weeks away!
