Lack of Respect
With the new day breaking, I walked the bank of the Pere Marquette, looking for my first honey hole of the morning.  It was beautiful – the sun’s rays bouncing off the banks, bringing new life to the early spring forage - but, as I walked along, something on the trail ahead caught my eye. WTF? A beer can.  And another beer can.  I hate trash! It amazes me as to how little respect s...
First Hawaiian Island Adventure
For those of you that regularly follow Simply Outdoors'  blog you know that I recently relocated to Hawaii. It has been a hectic and crazy summer to say the least, but I did finally get to experience my first "island edition" outdoor excursion recently. Words and pictures probably won't give the experience its due justice, but here it goes anyways. The day trip was planned to consist of a hike...
Another Mounted Buck for Justin
Our SimplyOutdoor Pro Staffer, Justin, had a great deer season last year.  And if you need to be reminded as to how "great" it was, you can click here. But, even though all of us completely remember how great his season was, and because Justin is the complete jerk that he is, he likes to send pictures months after the season in order to continue to rub it in. The picture in this post is of ...
Primal Thoughts
The corn is shoulder high, farmers are harvesting their wheat crop already, tomorrow it is supposed to be ninety degrees, and yet all I can think about is fall. It’s always interesting to see what triggers the senses and summons that primal hunting urge within.  The corn stalks glistening in the morning sun caught my eye this morning, as well as the morning sun’s reflection on the tractor ...
Role Reversal
After stumbling across this picture, I'm starting to get a little concerned.  I know that bears inhabit many of the woods around us, and while their population may be small in my area of Michigan, if they are starting to get this smart I might need to be careful when scouting, hunting, or simply heading to my treestand. And, Mike, my fellow Michigan hunting blog friend and bear hunter, you and...

Michigan’s Proposed New Antlerless Hunt: The Right Thing to do?

Posted By: Arthur on April 2, 2008 in Opinion, Outdoor News - Comments: 3 Comments »

whitetail_deer_look_at_you.jpgI recently discovered, by reading a post over at the Michigan based Hooks and Bullets blog, that Michigan is contemplating a new anterless deer hunt for the upcoming season. This particular issue should get plenty of publicity as it progresses and I am curious to see how it will turn out.

The Michigan DNR is proposing that the southern part of the state, which I agree has a definite overpopulation of does, have a 5 day anterless deer hunt that would start the second Saturday of October. This hunt would include Zone 3 (which includes a good portion of the lower part of the Lower Peninsula) and certain zones that are directly feeling the effects of TB in the local deer population.

While I do tend to agree that we have an over-population of does, I think that the timing of this particular hunt is not very favorable. I think that allowing this hunt to take place during the proposed time is going to have a direct effect on the rut in the particular areas mentioned. By having this hunt towards the end of October, it is going to be happening very near the time that the rut really starts to pick up and I think that is not a very wise choice.

I wouldn’t mind seeing an anterless hunt that would coincide with the Youth Hunt that happens in the latter half of September. I would completely back that proposition more so than I would for a late October firearm hunt. Any method that would move this particular antlerless hunt away from the start of the rut is a bonus in my book.

This hunt is obviously not a reality yet, and in the next couple of months there will be hearing and meetings on the subject, so I will try to keep myself updated, but I am curious to see how this all works out. If any of you are interested in reading about the proposal you can find it on page 2 of this document.

As always I will keep everyone posted.

I agree that it seems to be an odd time of year to have an antlerless hunt. Our midwestern state’s deer seasons seem to work really well:

Archery: Mid Sept – Mid Jan
    Youth Rifle: Early Nov
Regular Season: Mid to Late Nov
    Black Powder Season: Early Dec
    Antlerless Season: Mid Dec
    Roadkill Season: all year long…

    Arthur,
Sounds like a catch 22… You guys need to kill some of those does to help fix the buck to doe ratio as well as reduce the herd to match the carrying capacity of the land. However, like you point out, it may affect your rut; and by that I guess you mean by creating extra hunting pressure.
However while that is possible, it may also work to help the rut! Because by narrowing the buck to doe ratio, you create MORE competition among the bucks trying to breed the reduced number of does, thereby increasing buck movement.
You also need to look at this in the long term, not just to next season. By greatly reducing the does next year, your hunting should be much better in the following years.
But like you said, the plan is not a done deal and there is still time to get them to move the dates around. However, no matter what time period they choose, a special doe hunt sounds like it is still very much needed.
Also I will be waiting on those new trail cam pics… and congratulations on your first FAMILY outing the other day.
