Turkey Calling Practice
The other night the wife was going to be away from the house for a couple of hours. I knew this was a perfect opportunity to practice my turkey calling for this year. I’m not sure why, but she just can’t stand it when I call in the house. For whatever reason she thinks that the repetitive nature of the calling is annoying. Do you any of you guys out there understand this? I just don’t get it:)
I have a couple of different calls that I wanted to mess around with. Two are of the mouth call variety, and one is a push/pull call I bought made my Knight and Hale. I started last year using the mouth call and I’m moderately experienced with it, but I wanted something that was more solid and consistent on the calling part so I picked up this particular push/pull call. The one thing that drew me to it was that it has a volume adjustment. With this call I can also cut and purrrr more consistently then I can with my mouth call.
I pull out both calls and start messing around, and doing different sequences with them, and I have to say that the best overall sounding one was the push/pull. It sounds really good and I like the variety of different things you can do with it. The other call I liked was my Sonic Dome mouth call. I didn’t like this call at first, but once I got used to it I think the tone it produces is very cool and slightly different from most calls you hear and hopefully that helps me directly this year on a wary gobbler.
I will have you know that during the process of practicing I was very successful at calling animals in. Our White German Shepherd came in to each and every call I used and was very interested. Is there a White Shepherd season? I would tear it up during that time of the year if there was. You all know I’m kidding. You should have seen him cocking his head at me when I was calling. It was priceless!
I’ll keep practicing every chance I get, especially when the wife is out. Only a month and the season will be here.

My husbands solution to me not liking him practicing calls in the house was to buy me my own calls and make me practice with him - then he bought our friend who lives across the street a goose call and he’ll sit out on his front porch and start calling so my husband goes out and sits on our front porch and calls back to him - I’m sure the rest of the neighbors think it’s great…
My nephews Grandfather uses a plastic coffee straw. I was flat out amazed when he showed us how to use it! I have never been able to get that trick to work, but he sounds great with it!
I don’t understand it either. My wife thinks I’m crazy when I start messing around with my deer calls.
I’m really thinking about trying Turkey hunting next year, what do you think she will say when I start in with those calls.
Please please please!!! Wait until we leave the house. Or take a walk in the woods.
Ah, the sound of an H.S. Strut turkey mouth call. Especially when you aren’t particulary familiar with how to do it yet,in my case…At least I am getting a sound of it.
Going to be working on it. As time goes on might expand my collection to other types.
I’m guessing the dog was wondering what his crazy human was doing now. Here’s hoping all the calling practice leads to a turkey.
