SimplyOutdoors Mission?
Jeff and I have had this argument back and forth a couple of times now. What exactly it is that we want to get out of having our little website? It seems we never can come to an agreement on exactly what our mission for the site is. The debate still continued yesterday.
Jeff’s dream and mission for the site would be for us to have SimplyOutdoors Productions. He would love to start a production company and be producing amateur hunting videos for everyone to enjoy. He would also like to be sponsored and travel the United States filming these hunts that depict two average working guys and their outdoor adventures.
My vision is different. First off, I’m a pessimist, so I tend to lean towards the negative side of Jeff’s goal. In this day and age everyone is trying to start their own production company. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to look around and find a couple of guys who are trying to start their own outdoor company. They are everywhere and that means there is a ton of competition in the market that Jeff wants to pursue. That makes me very nervous.
The other part that I am always leary about is this. I never intended for this site to be a money maker or anything of that nature. It started as fun and I personally want to keep it that way. I’m not sure that can happen if we actually turned it into a full fledged business. It seems to me, that normally when a hobby like this becomes work, some of the pleasure of it goes way and I never want that to happen.
Now I know what all of you are wondering-”He said what Jeff wanted to do, and what he doesn’t want to do, but he hasn’t said what his goal for the site is.” Well here it goes. My mission statement for SimplyOutdoors would go something like this:
SimplyOutdoors.net will strive to be a positive voice for the outdoors. We will promote all persons, especially young people, who engage in outdoor pursuits as well as work to support our local and national outdoor organizations. We will promote our love and passion for the outdoors by working to portray a positive image of hunters and outdoorsman through various outlets. We will HAVE FUN!
There, in a nut shell, you have my mission for our site. I am thinking I might officially adopt it. I do want people to read the website, but most importantly I want every person that reads it to leave with a positive feeling about hunters and our outdoor pursuits.
One day down the road I might completely change my mind and Jeff might be able to sway me to the other side, but for now this is my goal and I intend to stick to it. Now that does not mean that you won’t see some fun things happening on the site. I would love to start filming hunts and doing things of that nature. The bottom line though is that I want it to be fun.
I think we have done a lot to accomplish our goals already and I’m looking forward to the things to come.

Your mission statement is very well stated. I like the fact that despite where this little journey of “Simply Outdoors” takes you guys that you HAVE FUN!!! That is the foundation of all outdoor activites! Enoying it!
P.S. - Jeff we are going to get a camera and I will do some filming for you this next season!!!!!
I see. So you are only going to film Jeff. Hey that’s fine. You guys just remember who got us permission to hunt the property:)::) Of course that doesn’t stop ya from filming on different property:):):)
I think that’s a pretty good mission statement. Sounds like you have some good goals.
Sounds like your outlook on your site is similar to my outlook on mine. Somebody recently asked me what I envisioned for the future of Bright Idea Outdoors. I paused for a moment and said that I wasn’t sure, but that as long as it was fun as I was going to keep on doing it!
As long as you enjoy what you do. That is what is most important. You never know what opportunity may be around the corner.
The mission statement is great. Expanding into filming could certainly be a “fun” expansion. I’ve thought about doing that with my brothers, just for the fun of it. I’m still not to the point of being willing to put my rifle or bow down, since I only get a few days a year to hunt. Maybe one of these days, I won’t be so selfish!
I like the simplicity of that mission statement and yet it says everything that needs to be said.
You’re right about that turning fun into a job will take the fun out of it. Having said that, there are still ways to have fun and make some money on the side to pay for the fun. Filming to make money with it however is not one of them.

Well now it sounds to me like you to fellows are have a really great time and alot of fun out of just deciding what you want from your website and what to put on it. This could turn out to be a long debate but the main thing is folks will read it regardless if you just write from the heart and make it interesting. By the way you’ve been added to another new website– http://fishingafield.blogspot.com which is just started up and in it’s first stages of running.
Hi Art - I believe that your mission statement is right on the money. I have experienced trying to make money off my love for fishing. I did make some, but, the enjoyment level went way down for me. The outdoors experience is what it is for each individual involved and that is what makes it fun in unique ways for all.
I think you are right about the video production… a very tough field. However that does not meant that you guys can’t include it here. That would give you even MORE material for your readers to enjoy.
I also think that you have created a great mission statement and that you are well on your way to accomplishing it. If I were you, I would pursue other venues for your writing as well continuing to make the most of your partnerships (michiganoutdoors for example)to increase your readership and the reach of your blog. SimplyOutdoors truly encompasses the best of what being a hunter is about, and our sport needs all of the positive publicity it can get. Good luck!
