Sponsor On-Board
It's been one heck of a month here at SimplyOutdoors, and it just keeps getting better.  I'm very proud and pleased to announce that we have our first sponsor - Cottage Craft Works. Cottage Craft Works make all kinds of unique things - hand-made furniture, fishing lures, custom gun stocks, toys and, of course, my personal favorite, hunting calls.  They make box calls, slate calls, owl hoots, ...
Walks: Getting Outside Anyway We Can
Sure, a lot of the sidewalks are a muddy mess, and a few of them are quite treacherous - ice-covered and very slick from the snow that has melted during the day and then re-froze at night.  But that hasn't kept the wife, Abby, or myself from enjoying a walk the last couple evenings. It's interesting this time of the year as well.  On one end it's great to see the snow disappearing and the sta...
Michigan’s Changing of the Seasons
I walked out the back door yesterday afternoon - to take out the trash - and I was promptly met by spring.  This weekend the weather has been unbelievable, especially considering that we were ice fishing just last weekend; we hit the 50 degree mark yesterday, and we're supposed to be in the high 40's, low 50's all week this week.  So much for ice fishing, I guess. What I experienced this week...
SOTV: New Youth Video
Head on over to SimpyOutdoors TV and check out the new video we posted. During Michigan's Early Anterless Season last year, Jeff and Tyler G. did their best to fill Tyler's first tag. This early season allowed Tyler to experience all the emotions that come with hunting - the feeling that comes with missing, and then the elation that comes with.........well you'll just have to watch to find out...
A Short Rant
I'm angry!  And that could be the main reason for this post.  I was going to write it last night, but I wanted to think on it for a night first and see if I still felt the same way in the morning........and I do. The long and short of this post is this:  It would be nice if some of our lawmakers, local authority figures, judges, and special interest groups didn't worry so much about "endange...

Finally, some outdoor activity

Posted By: Arthur on January 26, 2008 in Rabbit - Comments: 1 Comment »

100_3281.jpgToday was one of thee best days I’ve had in quite awhile.  I wrote my previous post about being all couped up and how I was getting pretty sick of it and today officially made it all better.

Lately we have had some bitterly cold weather and last week it was the main reason why our planned rabbit hunt got cancelled.  Finally though, it warmed up this weekend and we took advantage of it.  It was kind of a last minute deal, and I had to buy my license last minute, but we did get out and get some rabbit hunting in today.  I am here to tell you that the snow made it a little difficult, and we got quite a workout, but it was so worth it just to be outside.

Jeff, Ron (my cousin), Tyler (my nephew), and myself all went out and hunted for a couple of hours and had our best day rabbit hunting in quite some time despite the less than perfect conditions.  Our first stop, which is the main place we deer hunt, didn’t 100_3284.jpgproduce many rabbits, but the one it did I made sure didn’t get away with my second shot.  Okay so I missed on the first one, but he didn’t evade me on the second.

We then headed back to our other little sweet spot, the one where Jeff shot the deer following the cat, and apparently every rabbit in the county was using it as its hideout today.  We weren’t there 20 minutes and Ron put two rabbits down and then a few minutes later dispatched another one as it had already evaded Jeff and I.  We didn’t get any shots at him, but watched him run out clear ahead of us and then right straight to Ron.  His last mistake:)

So for those of you keeping score:

Ron                          3

Arthur                     1

Jeff                          0

Tyler and Jeff were excellent beagles and flushed all the rabbits we seen and Ron and I took care of the rest.  I’m not trying to rub it in or anything, but I did shoot more rabbits then Jeff.  I’m glad Ron shot all of his and it’s not a competition thing between us.  The important thing is I beat Jeff.  A little brotherly competition that I won.  Jeff, did I mention you lost?  Okay I’m done now.

So all in all an excellent day out.  It felt awesome to be outside and hang out with the family for awhile.  Also was cool that Tyler got to tag along and be our official bunny carrier for the day.  We ended shooting a few more than he could handle though which was not a bad thing.  Also felt very good to shoot the gun, hit my target, and supply some good food fotter for the table once Jeff fixes it and invites us over.

I think my cabin fever is officially coming to an end:)

It is fun to be able to breakout of the house when the weather allows. I have hated the extremely cold temps that have passed our way too.

Great way to capitalize on the better weather.
