Huntin’ Time Expo/My Lack of Posts
It's absolutely no secret that I've been neglectful of this blog lately. Some evidence: I never posted a few of the deer that Justin shot. I didn't post anything about Jeff, Barry, Erin, and Josh heading down to the ATA show in Columbus a little over a week ago. And I've never posted anything about the fact that SimplyOutdoors TV will be airing on the Pursuit Channel starting in January 2...
End of Deer Season: Maybe I Stink
Last night I cleaned my muzzleloader.  And though I usually love the feeling that comes with cleaning any firearm, last night's cleaning kind of depressed me a little, because it was a sure sign that another deer season had passed and that I had once again went through an entire season without putting any venison in the freezer. As I was cleaning and reflecting back on the last couple of seaso...
Bittersweet Hunt: The Rest of the Story
In my previous post, I eluded to the fact that my miss last Sunday morning was only the beginning of a very memorable morning.  Here is the "rest of the story". After my miss, it was still only a little after 8am, so Jeff and I decided that we might as well stick it out for a little while and see if any other deer decided they wanted to eat out of his food plot. And that is when the weirdne...
Bittersweet Hunt
Though I had only been able to hunt a handful of times, the fact remained that I hadn't laid eyes on a deer since around October 8th.  It was making it pretty difficult to head into the woods, because I honestly wasn't sure if I was ever going to see a deer again; I was starting to wonder if I had a deer whistle permanently embedded within my body that was preventing them from coming within a hal...
Another Deer for Jeff
While I don't have much to celebrate when it comes to deer hunting, after tonight I can bask in at least one thing:  that I told Jeff about Hornady SST's, and that, because of my wisdom, Jeff was able to put down this big doe without fear of his bullet coming apart. Congrats to Jeff.  Welcome to the dark side, and say goodbye to Powerbelts.

Hunter Serenade

ted-nugent-music.jpgAs a few of you know, who already read my about me post, I am a huge music lover. I have been a fan of music since I was a kid and was always exposed to many different kinds of music. I grew up listening to my dad’s radio stations and their country music ways, and then of course I had my older brother who was going through his 80′s big hair era. So I’ve always been exposed to all kinds of music and I still am very versatile. I can honestly take out a Hank Williams Sr. cd and slide in a Metallica cd without blinking an eye. I love music and it tends to follow me and be a part of everything I do.

So if everything I do has music involved, then hunting and being in the outdoors is no exception. Music has always been a part of our hunting lifestyle and serves a bunch of different functions. A song can remind us of a certain hunt, or a certain time, and can also be a motivation to get into the woods.

I have to be honest and tell you that a ton of our hunting music is by Ted Nugent. We here at SimplyOutdoors are big Ted Nugent fans, and enjoy a ton of his outdoor music. Ted can be a controversial figure, but we love his music and he has probably the biggest library of hunting music out there.

Our favorite hunting song of all time would have to be the Ted Nugent hunting anthem “Fred Bear”. There is honestly no other song that can get me ready for a hunt or hunting season then that song. Honestly, everytime I hear the line “was I alone, or in a hunter’s dream, cause the moment of truth was here an now” it takes me back to my very first buck, my very first draw on a deer, and even makes me think of my latest kill and the experience associated with it. Simply the best hunting song of all time.

Another song that has to go in the favorite hunting song category is Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold”. I realize the song has absolutely nothing to do with hunting, but the beginning guitar riff has always been associated with a truck, a field, offroading, and driving into the sunrise to hunt deer. Absolutely another one of our favorites.

Josh Turner has another excellent song on his first record called “Backwoods Boy”. Any song that references “gonna shoot me a ten point buck with eleven inch tines” definitely has to be included in the hunter’s song library. The song wasn’t very mainstream, but I can still tell you where I was the first time I heard it. Not many times you hear a hunting song on the radio like that. It had a big impact on me.

The list could go on and on. I love music and love having it be associated with my love for hunting. The two just tend to go hand in hand.

Now this post turns to you the reader. Is music involved or associated with your hunting experiences, or does music have absolutely nothing to do with your hunting? If music is involved in your hunting then let me know some of your favorites. They can be directly related to hunting, or for some reason make you think of a certain kill, or certain hunting trip, or moment. Do share. I can’t wait to hear what you all have to say.

“Oh Fred Bear, walk with me, down the trail again. Take me back, back where I belong. Oh Fred Bear I’m glad to have you at my side my friend, and I’ll join you in the big hunt before to long. Before too long!”

Backwoods Boy is a good one because it’s actually about hunting. But the song that actually gets me fired up when I’m headed for the woods is Charlie Daniels Simple Man.

Simple man is a good one!

“People done gone put their bible’s away, they’re living by the law of the jungle not the law of the land”

Get lyric for a lot of issues that effect us today. I’ve never really associated it with hunting, but I can definitely understand the appeal.

  3. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll, Arthur. I have added you to mine too!

I am a huge camper although I never did learn to hunt (miscommunication between my father and I involving moose and rabbits, long story).

Whenever I go camping I have to have CCR with me. Coincidentally I remember that that band was usually in the tapedeck whenever my father and uncle were leaving for a hunting trip.

I am no stranger to Ted Nugent’s music. I grew up listening to him and it sure brings back a lot of memories.

    Rock on…………….

Like Michelle I spent alot of time listening to CCR as well.

    Rock on twice…………….

Don’t forget “you do your thing” By Montgomery Gentry or the Mossy oak song by Tracy Byrd. But Ted is the one that really gets me fired up!

Yes, my dad too was instrumental in getting me interested in music. As far as I remember he didn’t listen to country. He wasn’t a hunter.

I can relate to songs being associated with different moments in our life situations.

Great topic in what music might get you to focus the mind in preparation for the hunt.

    Arthur,

Cool post… I too love music, and most of my adventures seem to have a song or album that was a big part of them as well. And when I remember those times, often it is due to hearing the song/album that was so important to me at that time.
I am (formerly) more of a punk/alternative guy, so much of the music I associate with is/was along that line. However as I have matured in my thinking, I have shifted away from bands that, no matter how great their songs are, do NOT represent me, the political positions I take or the values that I hold.
So like you, I love the NUGE since he is such a conservationist/roll model, is always VERY honest and ROCKS!
I look forward to completing my MEME post tomorrow (still looking for a few pictures to go with it)so that I can go further in to this whole music thing.
Hope you and Jeff, and both of your families, have a great holiday. Merry Christmas!

    Jeff
