Opening Day Wrap-Up
A pretty good day all the way around.
We all arrived in stand at about 6:30am or so and then waited for light. In reality we probably should have been in stand a couple minutes earlier, but in retrospect it still worked out pretty well.
I had a little spike come to within 25yds and decided to pass on him since he was definitely smaller than the doe I had already shot two days prior. He slowly walked down the ridge and proceeded on his way without having the slightest clue that I was even there.
About an hour after that I hear a shot from the middle of the swamp that instantly grabs my attention. I know it came from Jeff’s stand that is in the middle of the swamp. Instantly I’m on the radio trying to find out what is happening. Turns out he had shot a 7 pointer. His son was in a stand right on the other side of the tree so he also got to witness the whole thing and almost mess his pants when the shot went off. Jeff had tried to tell Tyler that he was going to shoot, but apparently Tyler didn’t hear him so the shot was a bit of a surprise. Jeff hit him a little high, but the shot caught shoulder and dropped him in his tracks. That always makes for easier tracking. Not a monster buck, but the first buck of the season and Tyler getting to witness the whole thing makes it even better.
The evening was incredibly windy and cold. Jeff did have an encounter with a monster (he swears it’s true), but didn’t have time to wield the muzzleloader in time. He disappeared into the brush for another day and another time.
All in all a pretty good start to the firearm season, and with a couple weeks left, there is still plenty of time to hopefully catch one of those monsters when their guard is down!

Good for Jeff, and that’s so cool that his son was there to see it happen. Now you just need to get your buck, Arthur. I know he’s out there.

There is nothing better than being in the deer woods during autumn except maybe for standing over a very nice harvest.
