Youth Hunt 2007
The Youth Hunt has come and gone and what do I have to show for it, but a few mosquito bites? Absolutely nothing! We did manage to have a whole lot of fun though and that is always the most important part.
Jeff, Tyler, Corrin, and myself all went out Saturday morning. Corrin about jumped out of her treestand when a doe didn’t like my pop-up blind and blew like crazy. First time Corrin had heard a deer blow before and it definitely got her attention. It was still pretty dark when it happened, so it even startled me a little bit. I’m sure she was only maybe 5 yards from the blind. I couldn’t hear her coming because it rained that morning so she was very sneaky and scared both of us.
Corrin and I ventured out again on Saturday night and the only thing we saw of note was a hot air balloon!! We could here them filling it for about an hour and then just before sunset we finally saw it just coming over the trees. At least it was something entertaining since the deer were not cooperating.
Sunday morning we ventured out again and it was a touch colder than I anticipated. I knew after about 2 hours in the blind that I did not have quite enough clothes on. I got to thinking, if I’m cold, Corrin is probably freezing. Took a little bit of coaxing, but I finally got her to admit she was frozen. So we didn’t stay as long as we would have liked, but oh well. I got to show her some fresh rubs I found and also stumbled across a pretty fresh scrape as well. So being cold helped our scouting out at least.
Sunday evening we all ventured out again (Jeff overslept Sunday morning, slacker!) and Jeff and Tyler had some doe action that you will see in the video, but once again Corrin and I didn’t see anything. I set us up in a spot where I knew we weren’t going to see a lot of deer, but if we did she had a really good chance of getting a shot. I played the odds and lost.
All in all we had a very good weekend. Had some fun hunting, and catching some football in between. The kids got to get the feeling of actually having a bow in hand and being in the woods, and Corrin got to see some fresh sign and experience a few things she hadn’t before. A very good weekend all around. She also managed to get opening day off on Monday, so she will have one more shot at getting out before her school gets in the way. Hopefully she whacks one.
Below is a little video we put together of our hunt. Take a look and we hope you enjoy. Hopefully in the future we will actually have some kill footage to show and a couple of trophies in the video. Here’s to hoping.

Cool video. Hope you get some bucks on the next one you make.
Still sounds like a fun weekend. Wish we could hunt on Sundays here in VA.
That’s pretty wild! I think it’s a great idea to take a camera along to keep everyone interested. It can be tough when nothing is working. Glad you all had fun. Tell the youngsters to keep trying. Don’t give up…persistence WILL pay off…
Congrats on at least getting them out there. A day in the blind can be a great experience. Sometimes, it just takes the right mentor to show a kid how great it is. Seems like you did a good job!
Here’s to the next outing.
Yeah I need to get a little better with the camera! oh well not bad for my 1st try..I wish i would have got the camera on before that deer got to far into the weeds..Watch for more vids coming soon!
Thanks for all the comments guys and gals! I love putting the video stuff together. It is a borrowed camera, but we are definitely going to have to purchase one. They are too much fun.
The video footage is great. I loved the shots of the kids practicing their shots.
I also think it’s great you guys are taking the time to show the kids the ropes. Looks like you’ve got a couple of hunters in the making there.
