First signs of Fall
As I walked behind the mower last week, I saw them - brown, green, crisp and dead - laying there in the mower's path; they were the first visible signs that fall is almost upon us. I realize that Labor Day isn't even here yet, but the dead leaves laying in the yard, the yellowing of the beans and corn, as well as the lower morning temps, are a sure sign that fall will be here soon. This time...
Abby’s first trip to the Zoo
With summer winding down, and hunting season close to kicking into full gear, the wife and I really wanted to do one last - purely for Abby - activity.   Then, one night while reading one of her favorite books, I instantly knew where we were heading - the zoo. Abby loves to read books involving animals, and she loves to name the animals as we read through the books.  She loves all the animal...
Moving stands, checking cams: No outfitter needed!
When I'm watching outdoor television, there is nothing that gets under my skin more than hearing the person in front of the camera say something like this: "Well......we're on our way to Battle Creek Outfitters to hunt for a few days. Jim, of BC Outfitters, has been watching a few bucks during the year, so hopefully we'll have a chance at one of them in the next few days. We're gonna get a sh...
The Aftermath
It rained on July 4th. And while the rain was a welcome relief to the retreating soldiers, as well as the victorious ones, it was not welcomed by the local residents of the little Pennsylvania town.  It came down in sheets, soaking the unburied bodies still on the field - some with hands folded, and others with clenched fists; it inhibited the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat across the Pot...
Nature: Life in Stereo
As the beginning notes of Round Here made contact with my auricles, I was in heaven; I had forgotten how incredible my Bose earphones were.  I could hear every instrument in the song - the chords on the guitar; the intricate timing of the cymbals and snare; the keyboard quietly playing in the background.  It was as if I was experiencing the song for the first time, though I had heard it many tim...

A good end to the week

Posted By: Arthur on August 31, 2007 in Deer Cam Pictures, Hunting - Comments: 6 Comments »

pic_0005.jpgIt’s Friday and I was lucky enough to have it off.  After my other obligations this week, Jeff and I finally got to sneak out to the propery and check the one trail cam we have up.  Got lucky too.

We caught the little guy yopic_0008.jpgu see at the start of the post making his way through the spot.  Also caught this momma and her child a couple of times.  I’m not sure what she was doing, having her kid out past midnight, but I guess something good must have been going on:).\

pic_0013.jpgI also have this picture, and if anyone can shed some light on it, I would love to know.  What is wrong with this doe’s neck??  Is that a normal thing? Is it just a pigment problem?  Thought it was kinda strange, so if any of you know what that it is do share.

I left the camera up in the same spot.  I think I will leave it there at least for another week, and then I’m going to move it back by my stand location for awhile.  I am so addicted to this cam thing.  It is so much fun.

Note–I also added all the trail cam pictures I have so far to the photo album page.  Go check them out they are under the hunting section.

Looks like mange to me. Might want to pick up an extra doe permit to take get her out of the neighborhood.

  2. Dana says:

A friend of mine had a shot of a doe that looked very similar. I thought possibly mange too. But what about molting? (or whatever they call it in mammals where they transition from summer coats to winter coats) It seems a bit early for that though.

  3. Arthur says:

    Dana,

I honestly thinking molting too, but I honestly have no idea. Thought I might do a little research into it and see what I could find, because I thought it was a little early for that as well.

probably has ticks up front and has been rubbing herself crazy. she is fat and looks healthy besides that. Should be Ok.

  5. Jeff says:

I have tons of deer on camera with the exact same markings. I don’t believe that it is molting because I have shots of deer in the middle of winter with the same thing. I also do not believe it is mange.
I think that they just rub themselves bald while trying to relieve the itching of mites and fleas. When we kill one, I will check it out more closely to see if we can’t figure it out. I also may take some of my shots by our local biologist to see what he has to say about the cause.

  6. Arthur says:

    Jeff,

Sounds good. I just had never saw that type of marking on a deer before. Concerned me a little. Let me know what you find out from the biologist if you get a chance.
