100_2448.jpgI had scheduled posts for this weekend100_2523.jpg because the wife and I were suppose to be camping at a work campout.  Well plans changed on Friday, that is for sure.  We live in the southern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and had an F3 tornado that came through Friday afternoon.  This tornado passed only about 2 miles north of my home and completely destroyed two of my cousin’s houses.  Everyone is okay though and that is the most important part.  I have never saw destruction like this however.  It is completely amazing what these things can do.

100_2442.jpgFor those of you who don’t know, we just don’t get tornadoes in Michigan.  I mean, we do, but normally  they are very small and don’t last long. This one however, was different.

So, the camping trip got cancelled, and we spent the entire weekend helping clean up and trying to salvage wha100_2441.jpgt we could of their belongings.  I am completely exhausted too.  It has been non-stop from Friday night on.

I am happy to say that we got a lot of stuff done this weekend and we will continue to clean this week.  Hopefully, I am never involved in anything like this again.

Just makes you thankful for what you have.  I cannot say enough either, about how many family, friends, and people, who showed up to help.  Nothing better than seeing the National Guard trucks pulling in to help out and their helicopters patrolling overhead.  Inspite of the devastation and everything that everyone went through, it was nice to see people banding together to help one another out.  Very cool.

I am glad to say too, that everyone is okay.  Even the dog and the cat.

All I can say is WOW! It is hard to belive that we were just there at the house. Looking at the pics is just unbelievable. You were right. Words don’t describe it.

  • Glad to hear everyone is o.k. Things can be replaced, people can’t.

I had heard about the tornadoes on the Michigan Sportsman board, but wasn’t aware an F3 had touched down. Looks like it did some serious damage.

  • I’m sorry to see the damage to your cousin’s homes. Thank goodness the whole family (including the pets!) were safe. Luckily our storms on saturday were nowhere near this severe.

  • Wow what a mess! You always hear about tornadoes and see the pictures of the power these things have. It always makes me glad to live in an area that is tornado free. Like Kristine says stuff can be replaced lives not and it is the lives that are lost every year to tornados that bother me deeply.

  • Wow, Mother Nature is an awesome awesome power. Glad that you are all OK!

  • It is wonderful to hear that everyone could feel secure when all they had was blown to pieces. Thanks to family, friends, and community…Time to rebuild ;)

  • Thanks everyone for the concern and words of encouragement. They are going to talk to a builder on Thursday night about pricing. So cool that things are moving so fast. State Farm is awesome!

We also have a good portion cleaned up and are working on it every night this week. I will keep ya updated.

  • So sorry that your cousins homes were destroyed and glad you made it though OK. We had a tornado to hit our hometown when I was 13 years old and to this day, I will never forget that sound. Over 30 people were killed. You all were very fortunate indeed. Glad the Insurance Company is moving fast, so they can get their lives back on track!
